Defensive standouts Reggie Ragland, A\u2019Shawn Robinson and Jarran Reed were on the field when Alabama won its 16th national title in January.<\/p>\n

All three were in the Green Room on Thursday night at Roosevelt University\u2019s Auditorium Theatre in Chicago.<\/p>\n

All three were waiting to be drafted by the NFL in the first round.<\/p>\n

None of them were selected.<\/p>\n

Until Friday, that is.<\/p>\n

In the second round.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a humbling experience,\u201d Ragland said. \u201cYou think you\u2019re going to go somewhere, but God has another plan for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Day 2 picks for the Chicago Bears<\/h1>\n

After sacrificing a fourth-round pick to trade up two spots in the first round
\nThursday, the Chicago Bears traded down twice in the second round Friday to
\nadd two fourth-rounders this year and another in 2017.<\/p>\n

Then the Bears drafted Kansas State offensive guard Cody Whitehair in the
\nsecond round (56th overall) and Florida defensive tackle Jonathan Bullard in the
\nthird.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The trio considered going home after Thursday\u2019s disappointment, but made a pact to stay and hear their names called in Chicago.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as the last pick (of the first round) happened, we all came together and decided we were going to come back and stay hungry,\u201d Reed said. \u201cJust wait it out until we walked across the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

From 2010-14, Alabama averaged three first-round draft picks a year \u2014 15 over five years. But this was the second straight year the Tide managed just one firstrounder, with center Ryan Kelly going 19th overall to the Indianapolis Colts<\/p>\n

During his introductory news conference with the Colts, Kelly praised Alabama\u2019s defenders for making him a better player.<\/p>\n

\u201c(My toughest individual matchup was) every single day in practice, going against the best defense and front seven in college football,\u201d Kelly told reporters Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, I wouldn\u2019t be where I\u2019m sitting today without those guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Day 2: Jordan Ray\u2019s Winners and Losers<\/h1>\n

Winners<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jacksonville Jaguars:<\/strong> Seeking to outdo their stellar Jalen Ramsey pick from
\nThursday night, the Jags selected Myles Jack 36th overall. Jack fell in the draft
\nbecause of concerns about a degenerative knee condition, but if he\u2019s healthy,
\nhe\u2019s one of the best prospects in this year\u2019s class.<\/p>\n

New York Giants:<\/strong> I love New York taking Sterling Shepard with the ninth pick of
\nthe second round. He\u2019s a dynamic player (one of my top-rated receivers) and the
\npairing of Odell Beckham Jr. is exciting.<\/p>\n

Losers<\/strong><\/p>\n

New York Jets:<\/strong> In one of the most baffling decisions of the night, the Jets picked
\nquarterback Christian Hackenberg in the second round. Hackenberg is coming
\noff two lackluster seasons at Penn State and is considered a project. The second
\nround is just too high for him.<\/p>\n

Tennessee Titans:<\/strong> The Titans entered the day with multiple picks, but wasted
\none on Alabama running back Derrick Henry. Tennessee already traded for
\nDeMarco Murray in the offseason, so picking Henry over a position of need (and
\nthe Titans have plenty) is puzzling.<\/p>\n

Tampa Bay Buccaneers:<\/strong> No kicker had gone in the second round since Mike
\nNugent in 2005 (47th overall to the New York Jets) and for good reason, but
\nTampa Bay picked Florida State\u2019s Roberto Aguayo with 59th overall. Seems like
\na huge reach with plenty of other solid players available.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Three of those guys finally joined him in the NFL a day later. For Ragland, the wait was tough.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was thinking everything,\u201d he said. \u201cI wanted to go home. Then I wanted to stay. (We all got together and said), \u2018Let\u2019s just stay.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Ragland ended up being the first of the three to be taken. The Buffalo Bills picked the linebacker at No. 41 overall.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all were upset,\u201d Ragland said. \u201cBut we knew once we got the opportunity that we\u2019d show them we can play ball.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robinson, a defensive tackle, went five picks later to the Detroit Lions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got the call, and it was just an amazing feeling,\u201d Robinson said. \u201cA blessing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robinson and Ragland waited with Reed until he was picked, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were all here for each other,\u201d Reed said.<\/p>\n

Seattle picked the defensive tackle at No. 49. Reed carried Skittles onto the stage in honor of retired Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, a commercial pitchman for the candy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it would be kind of funny to bring the Skittles out,\u201d Reed said. \u201cI\u2019ve been eating \u2019em the whole time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heisman Trophy-winning running back Derrick Henry, cornerback Cyrus Jones and running back Kenyan Drake also went on Day 2, giving Alabama seven total picks so far.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you get invited here, you\u2019re always going to expect to go in the first round,\u201d said Chris Jones, a Mississippi State defensive lineman who also waited to the second round before being drafted. \u201cEverybody has their expectations. They want to walk that stage before anybody. They want to be the guy to hug the commissioner first \u2026 it\u2019s not about who gets drafted first. It\u2019s about what they do once they get drafted.\u201d<\/p>\n
