{"id":42281,"date":"2016-06-02T19:48:55","date_gmt":"2016-06-03T00:48:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=42281"},"modified":"2016-06-02T19:48:55","modified_gmt":"2016-06-03T00:48:55","slug":"grappling-with-grief-the-frances-flowers-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/grappling-with-grief-the-frances-flowers-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Grappling with grief: the Frances Flowers story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> By Iacopo Luzi <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">Frances Flowers is trying to overcome the hardest tragedy of her life: she lost her daughter Taylor almost three months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor Flowers was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/local\/breaking\/ct-woman-dies-days-after-domestic-related-hostage-situation-20160317-story.html\">killed<\/a> by her boyfriend on March 11th of this year.\u00a0 He later killed himself. Flowers was shot with an illegal gun after a domestic dispute. The couple had a baby together named Avah. She fortunately survived.<\/p>\n<p>The killer had mental problems and it wasn&#8217;t the first time he was violent with his girlfriend, but 23-year-old Flowers was convinced that she could have helped him.<\/p>\n<p>Now Frances Flowers is taking care of the little Avah and thanks to the help of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagosurvivors.org\"> Chicago Survivors<\/a>, she is working toward getting back to a normal life.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"GRAPPLING WITH THE GRIEF: THE FRANCES FLOWERS STORY\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/168874842?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Chicago Survivors is a non-profit organization that offers immediate assistance to Chicago families who experience the homicide of a loved one. They respond to all the homicides by offering help and assistance from the crime scene up to six months after the tragic event happens.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago Survivors is the only non-profit in Chicago that offers this kind of assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Frances Flowers decided to share her story to honor her beloved daughter, to raise awareness for Chicago Survivors and to send a message to all women, so that what happened to Taylor, doesn&#8217;t happen to anyone else.<\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">\n<p>Frances Flowers shows some pictures of her daughter Taylor and her grandbaby Avah in a photo album.
