All of you guys are standing. I want you to recognize how incredibly blessed we are,\u201d she said at the student gathering about the Syrian crisis.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Loyola University Chicago students gathered last Thursday evening in an effort to stir empathy for Syrian refugees and to raise awareness about the causes of the refugees&#8217; \u00a0flight.<\/p>\n<p>Four Loyola student groups \u2013 Student Advocates for Medicine in Politics (SAMP), Students Organize for Syria (SOS), Loyola Refugee Outreach and UNICEF \u2013 launched a three-part Blossoming Hope campaign last week to bring attention to Chicago\u2019s growing Syrian refugee population.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was followed by a candlelight vigil to shed light on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/darkness-and-fear-in-aleppo-as-the-bombs-rain-down\/2016\/09\/28\/07b65246-842e-11e6-b57d-dd49277af02f_story.html?postshare=3211475114339970&amp;tid=ss_tw\" target=\"_blank\">recent escalation of violence in Aleppo, Syria,<\/a> and to mourn the lives lost there.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpmf-gallerys wpmf-gallerys-life\"><div id=\"gallery-1\" class=\"gallery gallery_life wpmf_gallery_default gallery_default none gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail gallery-link-post wpmf-has-border-radius-0 wpmf-gutterwidth-5 no_ratio\"><figure class=\"wpmf-gallery-item\" data-index=\"0\"><div class=\"wpmf-gallery-icon\"><div class=\"square_thumbnail\"><div class=\"img_centered\"><a class=\" not_video noLightbox\" data-lightbox=\"0\" data-href=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/DSC_7285-copy-1024x685.jpg\" title=\"Blossoming Hope at Loyola\" target=\"_self\" data-index=\"0\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wpmf_img\" alt=\"Blossoming Hope at Loyola\" src=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/DSC_7285-copy-150x150.jpg\" data-type=\"wpmfgalleryimg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/DSC_7285-copy-150x150.jpg\"><\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text gallery-caption\">The Blossoming Hope campaign was launched at SAMP\u2019s second general body meeting of the semester, in collaboration with Students Organize for Syria, Loyola Refugee Outreach and UNICEF. Half of those polled said they support the enforcement of a no-fly zone over parts of the country, including bombing Syrian air defenses.<\/p>\n<p>The Syrian government is responsible for the majority of civilian deaths in Syria, according to human rights monitors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local support for Syrian refugees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Blossoming Hope campaign was spearheaded by SAMP to stir compassion for Syrian children and to bring light to a humanitarian crisis of disastrous proportions that is too often ignored because Syria is \u201ctoo complicated to understand,\u201d said Mohammedi Khan, who is president of the student group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen thinking about Syria, you see videos of just rubble, dust, destruction, death [and] atrocities,\u201d she added. \u201cBut you can\u2019t get out of that mentality until you start to see positivity, you start to see hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khan, 21, and Melissa Vazquez, talked at the meeting about vulnerable populations and especially refugee children who suffer from workplace exploitation, educational deprivation and psychological trauma.<\/p>\n<p>They showed a video produced by the British charity Save the Children which makes the plight of Syrians relatable by imagining a British child refugee fleeing the UK in search of safety.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Most Shocking Second a Day Video\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RBQ-IoHfimQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The student groups will set up a table on Loyola\u2019s campus on Friday in order to talk to passersby about the five-year-old conflict in Syria, Khan said. On Oct. 12 Loyola students and young Syrian refugees in Chicago will paint and plant flowerpots, which the children will take home. The event will be co-sponsored by the Syrian Community Network, a grassroots group working to ease Syrian refugees\u2019 transition into life in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlowers are a symbol of positivity, growth and nurturing,\u201d said Khan, who wants people to focus on hope, which she says is often overlooked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solidarity with Aleppo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To symbolize the need for peace in Syria, students joined by concerned community members later gathered at the university\u2019s peace pole \u2013 a wooden pole with the message \u201cMay Peace Prevail on Earth\u201d inscribed in several languages \u2013 for a candlelight vigil, organized by SOS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are dark times we\u2019re living in,\u201d said SOS President Mahdi Sahloul. \u201cOver the last couple days, the largest city in Syria \u2013 one of the oldest cities in the world and the most dangerous city in the world \u2013 has been pounded by the Assad regime. Aleppo has seen hell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the world remains silent, we Loyola students, we, as a community, have gathered to pray and to organize, to stop the killing of civilians in Syria,\u201d said the 20-year-old student.<\/p>\n<p>He invoked the memories of Omran Daqneesh and Alan Kurdi, Syrian toddlers whose photos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/08\/19\/middleeast\/syria-omran-daqneesh-aylan-kurdi-reaction\/\" target=\"_blank\">went viral<\/a>, and lamented the global failure to protect civilians like them.<\/p>\n<p>One of those who spoke is Chicago pediatrician John Kahler. In April, the 69-year-old doctor read that the last remaining pediatrician in rebel-held Aleppo was killed in a Syrian government or Russian airstrike, and his soul was \u201ctouched,\u201d he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/07\/14\/middleeast\/opinion-syria-aleppo-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\">wrote for CNN<\/a>. He contacted the Syrian American Medical Society, a nation-wide organization, and asked if he \u201ccould go to Aleppo to witness and to testify to the city\u2019s devastation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Initially the group that supports hospitals in Syria was reluctant, but two months later, Kahler travelled to the eastern part of the city with two other Chicago-area physicians, who had been there before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no water. There\u2019s no shelter. There\u2019s only terror,\u201d he said, describing what he saw.<\/p>\n<p>As the crowd huddled around the three-starred green, white and black flag that represents the opposition to Syria\u2019s President Bashar al-Assad, some of them carrying electric candles, Kahler urged them to take action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to contact your representatives about the Caesar bill,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He was referring to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/global-opinions\/congress-launches-syria-sanctions-drive\/2016\/07\/14\/bf72911a-49c8-11e6-90a8-fb84201e0645_story.html?utm_term=.c7b251582ab2\" target=\"_blank\">Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2016<\/a>, bipartisan legislation that would impose new sanctions on the Assad regime and its allies, support investigations that could lead to war crimes prosecution and stir a negotiated solution to the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are the things we need right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Loyola University Chicago students gather at a candlelight vigil in solidarity with the people of Aleppo, Syria, sponsored by Students Organize for Syria, a national student-led Syrian solidarity group.
