At least 100 people gathered at a banquet hall on a cloudy Saturday afternoon on Oct. 15 in Chicago\u2019s Rogers Park to listen to a panel of speakers urge the audience to vote for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The event, held in the largely South Asian neighborhood along Devon Avenue near Rogers Park, was organized by the Chicago chapter of Muslims for Hillary, an ad-hoc group of American Muslims that has come together in a bid to help elect Clinton as the first female U.S. president.<\/p>\n

The U.S. census does not poll on religion so it is difficult to ascertain the exact number of Muslims in the country however, according to a Pew Research study<\/a> this year, Muslims make up 2 percent of Chicago\u2019s population.<\/p>\n

Samreen Khan and Salman Aftab, the main organizers of the event, assembled a wide array of prominent Muslim and non-Muslim speakers, including Bill Haddad who was the first Arab-American circuit judge in Cook County. Haddad, who resigned from the bench 10 years ago to practice law privately, told the crowd that the only way things would change was for Muslims to become active in their communities and get others involved too.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy do we hear rhetoric that is demeaning to us?\u201d he asked. \u201cBecause the politicians don\u2019t have to pay a price for demeaning us. That is going to change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anthony Simpkins, who became the first Muslim judge to serve on Cook County circuit court in 2015, also encouraged the audience to vote so they could have their voices heard. He said the country\u2019s changing demographics made it imperative that Muslims needed have a voice in politics.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone told me that if you\u2019re not at the table, you\u2019re on the menu,\u201d Simpkins said to much laughter from the audience before adding that Muslims want the same things that everyone wants.<\/p>\n

The event also provided a platform for non-Muslim politicians. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gaynor were on hand to talk about diversity in the country and the need to continue to honor the differences in race and religion.<\/p>\n

Gaynor spoke about the people who left countries because their leaders were bullies and are now in the U.S. and need to be helped and respected. \u201cWe want to elect someone who will respect them,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is our job to make sure that those who need our help have it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schakowsky recalled how after 9\/11, she participated in an interfaith march in the Devon area and how participants pledged they would never let a tragic event to turn us against one another. \u201cWho would think that in 2016 we have someone who aspires to be president who is stirring Islamophobia?\u201d she said. \u201cIt is the very thing we tried to prevent back then. What could be less American than a religion test?\u201d<\/p>\n

She also told the crowd that she had breakfast with parents of the slain army captain Humayun Khan Khizr and Ghazala, who spoke at the Democratic Convention earlier this year. She said she asked Khizr to sign her copy of the pocket Constitution so we can remember what this country is about. The crowd responded with loud cheers to this.<\/p>\n

Event organizer Aftab, a community activist and 2007 aldermanic candidate for the 50th Ward, which includes the parts of the Devon Avenue corridor, made a rousing call-and-response speech in which he urged the audience to combat the xenophobia, misogyny and Islamophobia that he said characterize the current presidential campaign with truth. He also quoted select passages from the Torah, Bible and Quran to show how each of the Abrahamic books show \u201cwe are all equal\u201d whereas \u201cDonald Trump divides on hierarchy of xenophobia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Trump] thinks Latinos are rapists, which is rich coming from a man who has history of assault, right?\u201d Aftab said to loud applause.<\/p>\n

Alderman Ameya Pawar, of the 47th Ward, the first South Asian to hold this position in this ward of Chicago, spoke of his own discomfort when flying. \u201cMy wife asks why do I get dressed up when going to the airport, and I say it\u2019s because I don\u2019t want issues. Sometimes I get weird looks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Pawar talked about people\u2019s base instincts that Trump had unleashed. \u201cThe civilized don\u2019t act on hate or xenophobia, but a candidate is asking people to act out on those instincts,\u201d he said, adding that Trump wasn\u2019t fit to serve as president. \u201cI\u2019m voting for Hillary because government is good,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we want people who think the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

The messages seemed to resonate with many of those in attendance.
\nZishan Alvi, 37, who moved to Chicago from Karachi in 1994 at the age of 15, and became a citizen in 2003, has been an avid Democrat. He said Clinton brings 30 years of experience, an understanding of peoples\u2019 needs as well as foreign policy. \u201cTrump is the complete opposite of that\u201d Alvi said. \u201cHe may be a good businessman but he breeds on all the negativity.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few prominent Pakistani businessmen with strong ties to the Democratic Party and the Clinton family also spoke at the event. They noted that as First Lady Clinton started the tradition of marking Ramadan in the White House with an iftar (breaking of the fast), which has been continued since the Clintons left office.<\/p>\n

Samreen Khan, one of the event organizers, said Clinton \u201chas always been friendly with the Pakistanis and Muslims over the years; she\u2019s been very easy to approach since when she was in the White House. Trump\u2019s hate rhetoric is instilling fear in the United States again and we won\u2019t stand for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Khan said she was pleased with the turnout at the event, she said the real challenge lay in getting people out to vote on Nov. 8. She said that she did not believe the Democratic Party\u2019s stance on issues like marriage equality and abortion would repel the more conservative Muslims. \u201cThe main issue is whether that candidate supports Muslims on the whole and diversity,\u201d Khan said.<\/p>\n
