His artificial trees can capture carbon dioxide directly out of the air\u2014and they\u2019re 1,000 times more efficient than nature\u2019s trees in doing so.<\/p>\n<p>Millions of the trees could eventually generate \u201cnegative carbon emissions,\u201d meaning they could take more carbon dioxide out of the air than we put in from fossil fuel emissions. That is what we need to reverse the course of climate change, he said. Image Credit Kelly Calagna\/MEDILL.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lackner developed the artificial trees to offset the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esrl.noaa.gov\/gmd\/ccgg\/trends\/full.html\">already-high<\/a>\u00a0global carbon dioxide levels. These trees\u00a0don&#8217;t look like natural trees &#8211; they don&#8217;t have leaves or branches. But they function in a similar way by absorbing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.\u00a0Existing technology could recycle the captured carbon dioxide and use it to as a resource to make fuel, \u201cclosing the loop\u201d of carbon emissions, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can argue where to stop [carbon emissions], but that we will have to stop is unavoidable. The world cannot run \u2018business-as-usual\u2019 in energy, it has to figure out a better way. And at the same time, it\u2019s not likely that it can do that overnight, so you do need to balance the carbon budget,\u201d Lackner said.<\/p>\n<p>Lackner&#8217;s trees are made from a special resin \u2013 a unique plastic that sponges up CO2 from the air in a chemical reaction. When the resin is dry, it \u201chas an exceedingly high affinity to carbon dioxide\u201d \u2013in other words, it absorbs the C02. And when the resin is submerged in water, it releases the carbon dioxide, Lackner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople say, \u2018Why not just grow normal trees, natural trees, rather than those artificial trees?\u2019 But I argue that\u2019s like pulling a plow over using a tractor. You certainly can do it with a horse, but it\u2019s not as efficient,\u201d Lackner said. \u201cOur trees are specialists for carbon dioxide collection, and they\u2019re about 1,000 times faster [than natural trees].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first outdoor prototype has been on the roof at Arizona State University for about a year, Lackner told climate scientists at this fall\u2019s annual Comer Abrupt Climate Change Conference in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s running essentially automatically, with a little bit of graduate student supervision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44846\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44846\" style=\"width: 459px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44846\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/Picture1.png\" alt=\"prototype-artificial-trees\" width=\"459\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/Picture1.png 459w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/Picture1-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 459px) 100vw, 459px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Klaus Lackner&#8217;s working prototype has been running on the roof of the University of Arizona&#8217;s Center for Negative Carbon Emissions over the past year. Photo courtesy of Klaus Lackner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One hundred million of Lackner\u2019s units, each built to remove one metric ton {2,204 pounds} of C02 a day, would be needed to match the amount of carbon dioxide the world currently emits each year, Lackner said. Adding more units would begin to lower the 400 parts-per-million (ppm) of carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere, a level that is on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we had another 100 million [units], you could bring [carbon dioxide levels] down another 2 ppm, per year,\u201d said Wallace Broecker, one of the world\u2019s pioneering climate scientists. \u201cIf we just did that, we\u2019d now have 200 million, one [million] matching what we\u2019re producing, and another [million] taking some out. Then to go back to 350 ppm, it would take 50 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scientists consider 350 ppm of C02 a ceiling to keep climate change under control, according to many experts. But technology exists that could also turn that captured carbon dioxide back into liquid fuels, essentially reusing carbon emissions to generate new energy, Lackner said.<\/p>\n<p>The concept is based on a process that was used in South Africa during the apartheid years. While under an embargo, South Africa \u201chad no access to oil, and they showed that you can convert coal to liquid fuels, gasoline and diesel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In this process, steam and coal are converted into carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Carbon monoxide and hydrogen can then be reacted to form any type of fuel &#8211; \u00a0gasoline, diesel, methanol, dimethyl ether or alcohol, he said.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of starting with coal, Lackner said, renewable electricity from wind or solar can be combined with captured carbon dioxide emissions and water to create carbon monoxide and hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we are right at the same spot they are to make fuels again,\u201d he said. \u201cThe technologies exist. Image courtesy of Klaus Lackner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Energy from solar or wind could drive the conversion, creating a way to store renewable energy from solar or wind power as gasoline for use in months with less sunshine or wind, Lackner said. This would \u201cmake it possible for the renewable energy to truly penetrate into the system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In order for that to happen, Lackner believes volunteers must first commit to capturing carbon dioxide waste. Then eventually, more people will see the benefits, get on board, and regulations could be established.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is, [carbon dioxide] doesn\u2019t hurt right away, it doesn\u2019t smell, it\u2019s invisible, and so it\u2019s hard to convince people. People don\u2019t realize that they put out 20 pounds of carbon dioxide every time they burn a gallon of gasoline, because it\u2019s invisible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re playing with something we don\u2019t understand and the easy way out is to not let [excess carbon emissions] happen,\u201d Lackner said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Image at top: An illustration of Klaus Lackner&#8217;s carbon capture devices, which might be needed to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide to a safe level.
