She bellows, \u201cWhere are all the Indians? Oct. 29, 2016.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Native Americans and Alaska Natives make up less than one percent of the U.S. voting population, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/data\/tables\/time-series\/demo\/voting-and-registration\/electorate-profiles-2016.html\">2016 <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/data\/tables\/time-series\/demo\/voting-and-registration\/electorate-profiles-2016.html\">census<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/data\/tables\/time-series\/demo\/voting-and-registration\/electorate-profiles-2016.html\">data<\/a>. In Illinois, they make up even less &#8211; 0.2 percent. Historically speaking, Native Americans have one of the lowest voter turnout rates among all ethnic groups in the U.S., according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demos.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/IHS%20Report-Demos.pdf\">research<\/a> by political participation expert Tova Wang.<\/p>\n<p>But with the election imminent, Native Americans\u2019 struggle for visibility continues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are so many groups of people, they outnumber us right away,\u201d said Power. \u201cAnd so it behooves us to really learn and keep together and remind each other that at one time, we were all the big, important nations here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the percentage of Native Americans is smaller than other ethnic groups, there is a lot at stake this election, according to Bender.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been hearing about people who weren&#8217;t politically inclined before are becoming politically inclined now,\u201d said Bender. \u201cI think it has a lot to do with the connection with the current events that are happening right now.\u201d Bender is referring to the controversial $3.8 billion Dakota Access Pipeline that is slated to carry oil from North Dakota to Illinois.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Fighting for the environment<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since April, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has been camping out in North Dakota, fighting the construction of a pipeline that threatens the tribe\u2019s sacred burial sites and water source. This has turned into an international issue that has brought Native Americans to the forefront of yet another environmental battle. Over 300 Native American tribes and a number of indigenous groups from other countries have stood in solidarity with the movement, now known as NoDAPL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s time to wake up at this NoDAPL,\u201d said Reginald Sawyer, president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/chicagotwospirit\/about\/\">Chicago<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/chicagotwospirit\/about\/\">Two<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/chicagotwospirit\/about\/\">&#8211;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/chicagotwospirit\/about\/\">Spirit<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/chicagotwospirit\/about\/\">Society<\/a>, an organization that supports Native American LGBTs. \u201cWe don&#8217;t need no oil spill because if those pipes bust and the oil spills in our water, that&#8217;s poisonous. Sept. 9, 2016.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although the NoDAPL movement has been getting a lot of attention, it is not just a pipeline that is on the minds of Native Americans in this election. Environmental issues in general are at the forefront.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this global warming thing going on, environmental justice is one of our biggest fights that we&#8217;re doing here,\u201d said Sarina DiMaso, of the Chiricahua Apache Nation and an organizer at the American Indian Center.<\/p>\n<p>Native Americans, whose culture and spirituality are deeply rooted in the environment, have a long history of environmental struggles on their lands, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/activists-behind-keystone-xl-pipeline-rejection-jane-kleeb-clayton-thomas-392565\">Keystone<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/activists-behind-keystone-xl-pipeline-rejection-jane-kleeb-clayton-thomas-392565\">XL<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/activists-behind-keystone-xl-pipeline-rejection-jane-kleeb-clayton-thomas-392565\">pipeline<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2016\/04\/10\/473547227\/for-the-navajo-nation-uranium-minings-deadly-legacy-lingers\">uranium<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2016\/04\/10\/473547227\/for-the-navajo-nation-uranium-minings-deadly-legacy-lingers\">excavation<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2016\/04\/10\/473547227\/for-the-navajo-nation-uranium-minings-deadly-legacy-lingers\">within<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2016\/04\/10\/473547227\/for-the-navajo-nation-uranium-minings-deadly-legacy-lingers\">the<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2016\/04\/10\/473547227\/for-the-navajo-nation-uranium-minings-deadly-legacy-lingers\">Navajo<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2016\/04\/10\/473547227\/for-the-navajo-nation-uranium-minings-deadly-legacy-lingers\">Nation<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2016\/04\/10\/473547227\/for-the-navajo-nation-uranium-minings-deadly-legacy-lingers\">.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But with the ongoing fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wearegreenbay.com\/news\/local-news\/tour-available-of-proposed-open-pit-mine-on-menominee-river\">proposed<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wearegreenbay.com\/news\/local-news\/tour-available-of-proposed-open-pit-mine-on-menominee-river\">open<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wearegreenbay.com\/news\/local-news\/tour-available-of-proposed-open-pit-mine-on-menominee-river\">&#8211;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wearegreenbay.com\/news\/local-news\/tour-available-of-proposed-open-pit-mine-on-menominee-river\">pit<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wearegreenbay.com\/news\/local-news\/tour-available-of-proposed-open-pit-mine-on-menominee-river\">mine<\/a> that the Menominee Indian Tribe says will disrupt sacred tribal lands, the issue of environmental injustice seems timeless.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had three presidential debates and the issue of this place being [in] a state of ongoing occupation of indigenous peoples\u2019 lands never came up,\u201d said Doug Kiel of the Oneida Nation in Wisconsin and assistant professor in Northwestern University\u2019s Department of History. \u201cAnd I think for a lot of people, that&#8217;s what&#8217;s exciting about this [NoDAPL] movement\u2014 [it] is that people are actually paying attention to it and hopefully, from there actually going to be paying attention to a wide variety of issues that affect Native people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Three 2016 Presidential <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Debates?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Debates<\/a> and we Native Americans who have lived here longer than anybody&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>WERE NOT TALKED ABOUT ONE SINGLE TIME.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; A Merciless Indian Savage (@YakamaRaised) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YakamaRaised\/status\/788933559444582402?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 20, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ever feel like <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AmericasWarOnAmerica?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AmericasWarOnAmerica<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/northdakota?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#northdakota<\/a> should&#39;ve been addressed at a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PresidentialDebate?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PresidentialDebate<\/a>? Now, all of the parties involved\u2014including the federal government, the pipeline company and contractors, the state of North Dakota, and the tribes\u2014need to find a path forward that serves the broadest public interest. As that happens, it&#8217;s important that on the ground in North Dakota, everyone respects demonstrators&#8217; rights to protest peacefully, and workers&#8217; rights to do their jobs safely.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That [statement] kind of shows that this isn&#8217;t really something that we can trust her with either,\u201d said Forrest Bruce, former co-president of Native American and Indigenous Student Alliance at Northwestern University. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think our issues are really represented on the ballot like they should be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Other concerns<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Other than environmental issues, Kiel and Bender think sovereignty is another salient issue surrounding this election.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seeing treaties honored\u2014it&#8217;s another issue that Native people are always concerned about. Is our sovereignty going to be protected?\u201d asked Bender.<\/p>\n<p>To Kiel, it is important that the next president recognizes &#8220;the ability for tribal governments to be able to actually have authority over their own lands and jurisdiction over the people within them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some are also concerned about poverty and homelessness in the Native American LGBT community, said Sawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics show that whoever wins the presidential seat has a lot to address among Native Americans. From 2007 to 2011, American Indians and Alaska Natives had the highest poverty rate, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2013pubs\/acsbr11-17.pdf\">U<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2013pubs\/acsbr11-17.pdf\">.<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2013pubs\/acsbr11-17.pdf\">S<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2013pubs\/acsbr11-17.pdf\">. <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2013pubs\/acsbr11-17.pdf\">Census<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2013pubs\/acsbr11-17.pdf\">Bureau<\/a>. Compared to all other races, Native Americans are 2.5 times more likely to be sexually assaulted, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ovw\/tribal-communities#1\">U<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ovw\/tribal-communities#1\">.<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ovw\/tribal-communities#1\">S<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ovw\/tribal-communities#1\">. <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ovw\/tribal-communities#1\">Department<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ovw\/tribal-communities#1\">of<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ovw\/tribal-communities#1\">Justice<\/a>. American Indians and Alaska Natives have <a href=\"http:\/\/indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com\/2016\/03\/17\/murder-poverty-indian-country-then-and-now-163674\">higher<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com\/2016\/03\/17\/murder-poverty-indian-country-then-and-now-163674\">incidences<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com\/2016\/03\/17\/murder-poverty-indian-country-then-and-now-163674\">of<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com\/2016\/03\/17\/murder-poverty-indian-country-then-and-now-163674\">illnesses<\/a> such as diabetes. They also have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/hestat\/suicide\/racial_and_gender_2009_2013.pdf\">highest<\/a> <u>youth <\/u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/hestat\/suicide\/racial_and_gender_2009_2013.pdf\">suicide<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/hestat\/suicide\/racial_and_gender_2009_2013.pdf\">rate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even voting is an issue for Native Americans. &#8220;People feel like their vote doesn&#8217;t matter,\u201d said Bender.<\/p>\n<p>Although there has been an increase in voter turnout in some communities, voter turnout among Native Americans has been low compared to other ethnic groups, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demos.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/IHS%20Report-Demos.pdf\">Wang<\/a>. This is because of a number of reasons, including distrust of federal government, desire for tribal sovereignty, voter discrimination and inaccessibility to polling places, wrote Wang.<\/p>\n<p>Back at the American Indian Center, Bender looks at the empty seats in the room. He tells Power that although there are fewer than 20 of them gathered at the American Indian Center, many of them are at rallies, protesting various Native American issues. \u201cI think people are making connections that they weren&#8217;t making before, so I&#8217;m optimistic that more Native people are going to be voting in this election,&#8221; said Bender.<\/p>\n<p>To people like Bender and Bruce, voting is only the first step to visibility.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important to go out and really make your voice heard,\u201d said Bruce. \u201cBut I think it&#8217;s important to try to work outside of the system and really try to disrupt politics and kind of like dismantle them and restructure them; rebuild them so that they can serve our people and what we need.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Native Americans stand in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota during the NoDAPL rally in Chicago.
