{"id":4844,"date":"2015-02-03T16:18:11","date_gmt":"2015-02-03T22:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=4844"},"modified":"2015-02-04T09:40:06","modified_gmt":"2015-02-04T15:40:06","slug":"women-on-illinois-corporate-boards-one-is-the-loneliest-number","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/women-on-illinois-corporate-boards-one-is-the-loneliest-number\/","title":{"rendered":"Women on Illinois corporate boards: one is the loneliest number"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Kate Morrissey<\/p>\n<p>When Victoria Medvec heard a <a href=\"http:\/\/catalyst.org\/knowledge\/2014-catalyst-census-women-board-directors\" target=\"_blank\">recent Catalyst report<\/a> about the small percentage of women on corporate boards, she had one question, \u201cWho are they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wanted to call the two companies in Illinois that had no women.<\/p>\n<p>Medvec, the executive director for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kellogg.northwestern.edu\/research\/cew\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">the Kellogg Center for Executive Women<\/a> at Northwestern University, said companies that include women on their boards end up with a higher quality board because they are pulling from a larger talent pool that includes greater diversity in experience and perspective. The center offers leadership workshops to executive-minded women and keeps a database of attendees to help board searches find qualified women.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoards are losing a lot of quality when they don\u2019t open it up to women,\u201d Medvec said. \u201cWhether you need somebody who has experience in certain countries or people who have experience with a certain kind of distribution, you\u2019re just more likely to get that experience if you tap the full talent pool than if you cut women out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the most recent Catalyst report, which used data from October 2014 based on Standard &amp; Poor\u2019s 500 index, two Illinois companies, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfindustries.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CF Industries Holdings Inc.<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stericycle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stericycle Inc.<\/a>, had no women on their boards.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Catalyst researchers gathered their data, CF Industries added one woman to its board, but Stericycle\u2019s board remains without a woman member. Stericycle board members were unavailable to comment prior to publication.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Soares, the director of research for Catalyst, said <a href=\"http:\/\/catalyst.org\/knowledge\/companies-behaving-responsibly-gender-diversity-boards\" target=\"_blank\">previous research studies<\/a> at her organization show quantitative benefits to having more women on corporate boards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a correlation between having more women as your directors and leadership with important business outcomes in a financial business case but also in a broader, corporate social responsibility way: how much\u00a0money\u00a0a company donates or their corporate social performance overall,\u201d Soares said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5157\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5157\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/01\/image-2.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5157\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/01\/image-2-769x1024.png\" alt=\"The number of S&amp;P 500 companies varies in each state. (Catalyst, Kate Morrissey\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Medvec, as well as Catalyst researchers, the shrinking count of companies with no women on their boards has led to a growing concern that one is the new zero.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies will put a woman on the board and kind of check their list,\u201d Medvec said. \u201cThen the companies will remain off the radar screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Based on the board member listings for Illinois S&amp;P 500 companies in January, 32 percent, or nine of the 28 companies, have only one woman serving on boards ranging in size from nine to 24 members.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5156\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5156\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/01\/image-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5156\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/01\/image-1.png\" alt=\"Illinois has 28 S&amp;P 500 companies, compared to similar states above. and includes the percentage of boards with only one woman. (Kate Morrissey\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Illinois has the largest percentage of boards with zero women or one woman compared to states with similar counts of S&amp;P 500 companies. (Catalyst, Kate Morrissey\/Medill)<\/div>\n<p>Brande Stellings, vice president of Catalyst, said she hears fewer questions about why having women on boards is important and more about how to make it a reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully at this day and age, when people look at the population of the corporate board, I think they want to see the talent pool and the marketplace reflected,\u201d Stellings said. \u201cWhen they look at\u00a0the board and see zero women on it, it makes people ask what\u2019s wrong with this picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Kellogg Center for Executive Women, according to Medvec, teaches women to speak up about their goals to help them get considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that most board searches are not filled by search firms; most are filled by word of mouth,\u201d Medvec said. \u201cWomen just don\u2019t get considered. People will often say, \u2018Oh, she\u2019s really busy.\u2019 We tell women it\u2019s important to be clear in articulating that interest to people in your network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stellings said adding women to their boards should become a corporate priority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard other chairs of boards say gender diversity is not hard if you\u2019re committed to it,\u201d Stellings said. \u201cWhen leaders and companies set an intention and a goal, then it happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Soares, that means everyone still has work to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter what industry you\u2019re in or what region you\u2019re in, you have a very far distance to go before we reach that critical parity point,\u201d Soares said, referring to an overall goal of boards that are split evenly between men and women.<\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Based on the recent Catalyst report, 29 percent of Illinois S&amp;P 500 companies have boards composed of at least 25 percent women.
