{"id":48464,"date":"2017-01-17T17:49:45","date_gmt":"2017-01-17T23:49:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=48464"},"modified":"2017-01-17T17:49:45","modified_gmt":"2017-01-17T23:49:45","slug":"trump-meet-boeing-ceo-air-force-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/trump-meet-boeing-ceo-air-force-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump, Boeing CEO work to lower cost of Air Force One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Shen Lu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">Boeing Co. will reduce the costs of an Air Force One upgrade, the company\u2019s CEO Dennis Muilenburg said after a Tuesday meeting with President-elect Donald Trump in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was held at Trump\u2019s request after he pressured the Chicago-based aerospace and defense company last month to lower prices on the new version of Air Force One, the presidential jumbo jet.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe discussed Air Force One, we discussed fighter aircraft,\u201d Muilenburg told reporters after the meeting at Trump Tower in New York. \u201cWe made some great progress on simplifying requirements for Air Force One, streamlining the process, streamlining certifications by using commercial practices, all of that is going to provide a better airplane at a lower cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Specific reductions have yet to be announced.<\/p>\n<p>Although Muilenburg didn\u2019t elaborate on the fighter jet program, he likely referred to the F-18 Super Hornet, which Trump suggested\u2014via Twitter\u2014last month be priced-out to compete with the Lockheed Martin Corp.\u2019s F-35.<\/p>\n<p>The president-elect boasted of \u201cthe massive cost reductions\u201d he has negotiated on military purchases in a Twitter posting Tuesday. \u201cI believe the people are seeing \u2018big stuff,\u2019\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>Last December, Trump threated to cancel Boeing&#8217;s Air Force One order via Twitter, saying the price was \u201cout of control.\u201d Boeing vowed at the time to keep the cost of the program under $4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing\u2019s spokesperson Todd Blecher said in an email that this meeting was part of an ongoing effort to provide Trump\u2019s team the information it requested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remain committed to working with the new president and Congress to provide affordable, capable Boeing products and services to meet our national security needs,\u201d Blecher said.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts said it\u2019s unclear at this stage how the cost reductions will affect Boeing\u2019s business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Air Force One] is only going to be manufactured in a small amount; it\u2019s not going be a huge impact,\u201d Edward Jones\u00a0analyst Jeff Windau said in a phone interview. \u201cBut it\u2019s difficult to fully gauge what\u2019s happening until we know more details of what that cost reduction exactly means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, it\u2019s always good to make things more affordable, and there is no harm to be on the president\u2019s good side, Windau said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously he\u2019s the commander in chief, so you always want to make sure you are trying to meet his demands,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Boeing is currently under a <a href=\"http:\/\/boeing.mediaroom.com\/2016-12-06-Boeing-Statement-on-Air-Force-One\">$170 million contract<\/a> to help determine the capabilities of the Air Force One aircraft, according to a press release on Dec.6, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>After the Tuesday meeting, Muilenburg said Trump is \u201cdoing a great job engaging business,\u201d that the two businessmen are \u201con the same page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boeing stock closed at $157.67 Tuesday, down $1.16.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: An Air Force One plane at an airport.
