When the doors opened at 8 a.m. sharp on Saturday morning, there was already a line of people ready to make signs and socialize before the Women\u2019s March on Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Nineteen-year-old Alivia Heuer, a freshman at Northeastern Illinois University, was one of the first to arrive. She took to the supplies with purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI honestly think that instead of trying to rebel against the current administration we should try to protect those who might be adversely affected,\u201d Heuer said while filling in the large bubbled letters of her sign with red sharpie. \u201cSo that&#8217;s why I\u2019m writing love is greater than hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"It Takes Generations: Follow Chicago&#039;s Feminists to the Women&#039;s March\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/201923181?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nThough young, Heuer has already participated in the Take Back the Night march, the Chicago Public School strikes, and she\u2019s a member of the Feminist Collective club at NEIU, helping with events promoting women\u2019s and LGBTQ rights. Her motivations for joining Saturday\u2019s march were manifold, but were in part inspired by the women in her own family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandmother passed away a few years ago but she still to this day is an inspiration to me because she was a single mom,\u201d Heuer said. \u201cShe worked as a waitress, dropped out of school so she could support her children. I think it\u2019s a very admirable thing to do\u2026to not rely on anyone to get what you need to survive. She was very independent. And my mother as well [is] a single mother\u2026they really inspire me. (Ritu Prasad\/MEDILL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the other side of the table, behind the children\u2019s books on display, Alysia Kinsella watched over her daughter\u2019s sign-making.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been teary most of the day already,\u201d Kinsella said. \u201cMy sister\u2019s in Washington, my mom\u2019s here, my daughter\u2019s here. We\u2019ve got three generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The march is Kinsella\u2019s first foray into activism, but her mother is no stranger to the fight. \u201cShe said she even protested when I was in her belly a long time ago,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have a lot of strong women in my family\u2014I\u2019ve always admired my mom\u2026she\u2019s been a working mother and I\u2019m a working mother, and I feel like we need to support each other better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kinsella\u2019s own sign read \u2018empathy is my weapon.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really believe we need to reach out to everybody, to understand what people\u2019s issues are\u2014even those that we don\u2019t agree with,\u201d she said. \u201cI came mostly because I didn&#8217;t like the divisiveness of the election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the shop, Christopher Wilson had taken a seat by the cashier\u2019s desk to keep out of the way of people rushing between decorating and discussions. (Ritu Prasad\/MEDILL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A first-time protester, Wilson wanted to show support for the women in his life and across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump has said and done things that are terrible along every spectrum, but the fact that someone can be on the record saying the things that he\u2019s said about women and still get elected president speaks to a big problem with society,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cThis march and other things like it are going to show there are a lot of people who are not okay with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the older brother to two twin sisters and an uncle to three nieces, Wilson\u2019s thoughts turned to the world his younger relatives would be growing up in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[My sisters] are going to be 17 this year and I don&#8217;t want them living in a world where stuff like this is acceptable,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cI don&#8217;t want my three baby nieces growing up in a world where the leader of the free world can say things like \u2018just grab \u2018em by the p*ssy\u2019 and still get elected president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilson\u2019s passionate explanations were interrupted by a sudden call to silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a man, yes, but I\u2019m just interrupting the talking so that a woman can speak!\u201d someone yelled.<\/p>\n<p>To rippling laughter (buoyed perhaps by the caffeine and sugar), bookstore co-owner Sarah Hollenbeck addressed the morning\u2019s attendees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are my country, you are my hope,\u201d Hollenbeck said, emotion heavy in her voice. \u201cI\u2019m so touched that you decided to begin your day here at Chicago\u2019s only feminist bookstore\u2026we need to keep these faces alive and healthy and vibrant for the next four years and further. Let\u2019s go resist in peace! I love all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The robust group of women, children, and men chorused their support in claps and whoops and, filing out between the bookshelves, began their march.<\/p>\n<p>The first Red Line train was already packed with fellow protestors. As the doors opened, people exchanged grins and waves across the tracks. The second train was nearly as full, but somehow, everyone managed to fit onboard, a puzzle of people crushed together by necessity.<\/p>\n<p>The outpouring at the Jackson stop rekindled the momentum lost in transit. A river of pink and bobbing signs guided newcomers to the main event at Grant Park.<\/p>\n<p>At the park\u2019s entrance, Lindsey Gavel and her mother-in-law, Janice Domanik, stood atop low cement blocks to survey the scene. The last time Gavel found herself in Grant Park, Obama had just won his first term. The vibe this time, she noted, laughing, was considerably different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that there are over 500 sister marches happening outside of Washington D.C., like, that says something. People are not happy,\u201d Gavel said.<\/p>\n<p>Domanik interjected: \u201cAnd they\u2019re not just in this country! Wearing a pink \u2018p*ssyhat\u2019 that Gavel had crocheted for her the night before, she was an ardent advocate for all the march stood for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGloria Steinem did a lot for getting feminism started, but there were women who you\u2019re never gonna hear of who just went in and were in the trenches,\u201d Domanik said. \u201c[Trump] needs to pay attention to the fact that women are people, too, and to treat a woman other than with respect is a violation of our Constitution. It says we the people. That means everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gavel, smiling beneath a matching homemade hat, echoed her mother-in-law\u2019s sentiments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother is actually a very strong Trump supporter in Michigan,\u201d she revealed. \u201cHa-ha. We don\u2019t talk about it really.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Gavel\u2019s mother didn\u2019t even know her daughter was planning on attending the march that day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe will now,\u201d Gavel joked.<\/p>\n<p>Domanik laughed. \u201cHer mother\u2019s not going to speak to me anymore!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the them, a couple had lifted their young son atop metal railings so he could proudly exhibit his own sign: \u201ctiny hands, huge a**hole.\u201d In the distance, a father held a sign reading, \u201ctoday she calls me dad, tomorrow I\u2019ll call her president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the funneling influx of newcomers, someone with the foresight to bring a sound system played Destiny\u2019s Child\u2019s &#8220;Survivor&#8221; as a string of protestors, holding a banner decreeing \u201cpower to the people\u201d danced through the masses.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">At the entrance to Grant Park, a young boy clambers onto the railings to show off his sign.
