{"id":5052,"date":"2015-02-02T14:39:05","date_gmt":"2015-02-02T20:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=5052"},"modified":"2015-02-03T16:01:25","modified_gmt":"2015-02-03T22:01:25","slug":"doritos-puppies-and-domestic-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/doritos-puppies-and-domestic-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Puppies, domestic violence focus of Super Bowl ads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Lukas Voss<\/p>\n<p>Wedged between Cris Collinsworth\u00b4s analysis and Katy Perry\u00b4s elaborate halftime extravaganza, a 911 call involving a pizza delivery halted the usual Super bowl commercial landscape.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/site.nomore.org\/nflplayerspsa\/\" target=\"_blank\">The NFL, in collaboration with NO MORE<\/a>, a campaign to raise awareness and end domestic violence, used its airtime during the biggest television event of the year to air the first-ever public announcement against domestic violence during the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>Many people were genuinely impressed with the ad on twitter with reactions ranging from being completely floored by its content, to supporting NO MORE in the effort to publicize the issue of domestic violence.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"relatedleft\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>Just pressed rewind to watch 911 pizza domestic violence ad again. Wow. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/sb49?src=hash\">#sb49<\/a>\u2014 Jennifer Maguire (@jmagNYC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jmagNYC\/status\/562054315045847041\">February 2, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"related\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>That 911 commercial was by far the most powerful ad I&#8217;ve ever seen\u2014 Ashley (@Ashleyv_wells) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ashleyv_wells\/status\/562054131557208065\">February 2, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p>Experts such as Margaret Duval, executive director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvlcchicago.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago-based Domestic Violence Legal Clinic<\/a>, also voiced their support for the ad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like this one a lot,\u201d Duval said. \u201cThe panning through the house and some of the details ring very true to the experiences of our clients. The wall being punched is something that we see over and over again. The sense of being trapped. The sense of being held in captivity, being chased around the house being beaten and not able to leave or call the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many viewers tweeted they were also confused. The story of the actual 911 call had not made the rounds to everybody. Many viewers believed that NO MORE just didn\u00b4t get their point across. The shuffled house. It feels like it\u00b4s soft peddling it almost,\u201d said Cairns, currently a managing partner at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blastmarketing.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Blast! Marketing and PR in Chicago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe family pictures were kind of trying to say how it impacts the family, it tries to capture that, but doesn\u00b4t really capture that tension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adland.tv\/commercials\/bud-light-arms-2003-030-usa\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Oberman has produced several Super bowl commercials<\/a> and has worked with large cooperations to craft a clear and understandable message.<\/p>\n<p>While he believes it was well done, he said the message was simply not clear.<\/p>\n<p>[youtube http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rTJT3fVv1vU]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimplicity should be your number one priority,\u201d Oberman said. \u201cThe last thing you want is someone being confused by your message. This feels very convoluted to me. If you miss that front end of the spot, you are kind of lost.<\/p>\n<p>Where does it fit in to the whole outlay of (Super bowl) spots? I am confused by what they want from the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"related\">[youtube http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VbwTMJroTbI&amp;w=560&amp;h=150]<\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">(TMZ)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The NFL has tried to confront the issue of domestic violence since the video of Baltimore star running back Ray Rice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VbwTMJroTbI\" target=\"_blank\">punching his fianc\u00e9e in an Atlantic City elevator appeared in February 2014<\/a>. Partnering up with <a href=\"http:\/\/nomore.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">NO MORE<\/a> is one in a series of attempts to repair the NFL\u00b4s damaged image. The effort also includes clinics for players <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/story\/0ap3000000397110\/article\/goodell-sent-memo-to-teams-about-domestic-violence-resources\" target=\"_blank\">as well as a memo that went out to all 32 teams<\/a> identifying support organizations in the respective local markets.<\/p>\n<p>But Kathleen Doherty, executive director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/batteredwomensnetwork.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Metropolitan battered Women\u00b4s network<\/a>, still believes airing the Super Bowl ad was a last resort option.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey waited until it was right in front of their eyes where they couldn\u2019t but do something about it.
