Giordano Dance Chicago<\/a> performed their first full-length evening at the Auditorium Theatre Saturday, including the premiere of \u201cShirt Off My Back\u201d by Ray Mercer as part of the theater\u2019s new \u201cMade in Chicago\u201d series.<\/p>\n

The performance was a huge milestone for artistic director Nan Giordano, whose father Gus Giordano formed GDC in Evanston in 1963.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a very honored, exciting opportunity for our company,\u201d Giordano said. \u201cWe have been on the Auditorium stage numerous times, but we\u2019ve never had our own evening.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Auditorium Theatre<\/a> opened in 1889, and was home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra between 1891 and 1904. Legendary dance companies such as The Joffrey Ballet<\/a> and Bolshoi Ballet<\/a> have performed on its stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd for me personally,\u201d Giordano added, \u201cSince I was a young girl I would go to many things with my father, and he was always very anxious to have his company on the stage. After 52 years, we made it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Giordano took over as art director in 1993 and has been running GDC since her father died in 2008. She had been reminding the dancers how huge the performance was, and they were buzzing with excitement as they prepared for the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re in the history making right now, because we have not been on the Auditorium stage on our own,\u201d Giordano said. \u201cThe dancers that we have really embrace Giordano Dance Chicago and they are very committed. They especially like when they are part of the legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Excitement aside, the company prepared for the performance just as intensively as for any other performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of rehearsal, a lot of fine tuning, a lot of practicing, a lot of time and energy, a lot of work on the administrative side,\u201d Giordano said. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of work to put on a show, and this is no different in the preparation for it. It\u2019s just in a different, exciting hometown venue for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The performance comprised the world premiere of \u201cShirt Off My Back\u201d; a revised version of \u201cMoving Sidewalks\u201d by Autumn Eckman; \u201cEXit4\u201d by Roni Koresh; \u201cFeelin\u2019 Good Sweet\u201d by Ray Leeper; and \u201cAlloy,\u201d also by Eckman.<\/p>\n

Choreographed by Broadway star and former Chicagoan Ray Mercer<\/a>, \u201cShirt Off My Back\u201d highlights the sacrifices people make entering into relationships. Giordano and company agreed that the piece was well suited to the Auditorium\u2019s \u201cMade in Chicago\u201d series.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought it would be nice to have someone from Chicago that\u2019s been in New York coming back to Chicago,\u201d Giordano said of Mercer, who is currently a cast member of Broadway musical \u201cThe Lion King.\u201d<\/p>\n

Autumn Eckman\u2019s 2013 \u201cMoving Sidewalks,\u201d inspired by the changing landscape of Chicago\u2019s Pilsen neighborhood in the mid-19th<\/sup> century, was also considered a good fit for the series. The revised version featured new costumes with a more historical look and included Giordano II along with the original 10-member company, a total of 16 dancers on stage.<\/p>\n

Whether you were able to catch GDC at the Auditorium or plan to see them perform at \u201chome\u201d at Harris Theater in Millennium Park<\/a>, Giordano has one goal: you feel, not just see.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really most important that the audience walks out of the theater, no matter where it is, saying, \u2018Wow, I am so energized. I really felt them,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cI want the audience to feel us, not only see that we\u2019re good.\u201d<\/p>\n

While GDC is a jazz dance company, Giordano says the genre has \u201ca large vocabulary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI try to take the audience through a journey, so they\u2019ll see a lot of different styles, different music types,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re a jazz company, we just push the envelope with the breadth and depth of our repertoire. And that\u2019s what jazz is \u2013 it\u2019s not just dancing to jazz music.\u201d<\/p>\n
