Since then, tensions between the police and Chicago residents have continued, drawing distinct lines throughout the city. One Chicago neighborhood takes a visible stand on the side of the police.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Chicago neighborhood awash in blue\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/204706408?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Close to Midway International Airport, Garfield Ridge is a neighborhood comprising a high percentage of police officers, firefighters and medical service providers. The median <a href=\"http:\/\/www.city-data.com\/neighborhood\/Garfield-Ridge-Chicago-IL.html\">household income<\/a> in Garfield Ridge is $67,576, compared to the Chicago median income of $50,702. The streets, homes and small shops are lined with blue ribbons and flags with a blue line through it, representing support for police. The idea was born\u00a0in 2014, after NYPD\u00a0officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were shot in\u00a0Brooklyn, New York, and the flag represents &#8220;Blue Lives Matter.&#8221; The pro-police movement in the United States was formed in response to Black Lives Matter.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>An ordinance is also associated with the flag. Known as the \u201cBlue Lives Matter\u201d bill, the ordinance would make attacks on police officers, firefighters, and medical workers a &#8220;hate crime&#8221;. \u00a0Ald. Edward Burke (14th), who presides over the Garfield Ridge neighborhood, introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.legistar.com\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=2765996&amp;GUID=04AF7272-8F67-43C9-AAE1-7EADCB4AAA73&amp;Options=Advanced&amp;Search=\">the ordinance<\/a>\u00a0in the summer of 2016, after a similar bill was approved in New Orleans earlier last year.<\/p>\n<p>The ordinance <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/chi-marquette-ct0040298398-20160806-photo.html\">sparked\u00a0protests<\/a> in Chicago, with Black Lives Matter activists gathering outside of Burke&#8217;s office to express their concern in August. The ordinance is yet to be approved by the Chicago city council.<\/p>\n<p>Lifetime resident of Garfield Ridge and chef, John Sakellaris, explained the significance of Garfield Ridge&#8217;s &#8220;total support of the police&#8221;.
