This is the new home of The Overlook Place, a studio and residency program dedicated to giving women artists, queer artists, and artists of color a space to create and be heard.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Fagan, Overlook\u2019s founder, explained how the art world\u2019s hierarchical culture motivated her to found her own art space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s women\u2019s art, queer art, there\u2019s black art, and then there\u2019s the art that gets shown, which is not any of that,\u201d Fagan said. \u201cI wanted to create spaces for all this art but not have it pigeonholed as \u2018this\u2019 art.\u201d<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/advocate\/get-facts\" target=\"_blank\">National Museum of Women in the Arts<\/a>, over half of visual artists in America today are women, though only 30 percent of works in commercial galleries are made by women. As of 2017, Fagan has managed five residencies with seven artists, hosting shows, events, and recently, a film screening. She also held a feminist conversation the day after the 2016 election. Since then, Fagan said, politics have become an ever-present part of the art community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn November, the whole room was daunted by four years \u2013 a possible eight years \u2013 of this,\u201d Fagan recalled. Her work before the election, she said, had been feminist but not necessarily political. \u201cIt\u2019s our responsibility [to] hold each other up and say look at these intelligent ways we can talk about serious things and our anger and our fear and give voices to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sydney Shavers, Fagan\u2019s first residency artist, said her own definition of art \u201cis becoming extremely political.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now I have no interest in anything that\u2019s not political, art-wise,\u201d Shavers said. \u201cIt\u2019s very overwhelming at times, but you have to just keep on making things and doing things\u2026Art for me is trying to start a conversation, trying to bring a problem to light and understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shavers\u2019 own activist art has been the source of controversy before; a piece on the sexuality of black women was ripped off its display wall a few months ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had my work thrown in the trash before when I was in art school,\u201d Shavers added. \u201cIt\u2019s an experience; it\u2019s a reaction. I think that\u2019s the most important thing: I want a reaction\u2026Some people might not understand the work, but I\u2019m not super concerned by that. (Ritu Prasad\/MEDILL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Chicago is home to over 200 theaters and art galleries and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagoartistsresource.org\/field-notess\/portrait-artists-culturalindicatorsorg-compiles-arts-workforce-data\" target=\"_blank\">an estimated 63,000 artists<\/a>. According to Fagan and Shavers, Chicago artists are consistently concerned with bridging divides, reaching across neighborhood lines and political ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s such a good place to be a young artist, a woman artist, a woman of color, because there are so many places being created,\u201d Shavers said.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cGiving light and a platform to artists that are doing amazing things politically and talking to each other has been really important,\u201d Fagan said. \u201cI\u2019ve been wondering, too, how can we make art or art events or art spaces that\u2019s not just echoing our own community? That\u2019s what\u2019s really hard. Everyone at the feminist film fest knows what we\u2019re talking about. But how can I show that to a group of Republicans, maybe, and have it simmer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fagan said her artists until now have all been women, but she hopes to bring other voices into the Overlook too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that voices should be heard from men,\u201d Fagan said. \u201cI\u2019m thinking of doing a panel of feminist men\u2026because that\u2019s something that\u2019s lacking. Even from our feminist conversation in November about Trump, where were the men?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/united-by-post-inauguration-marches-democratic-women-plan-to-step-up-activism\/2017\/02\/01\/373004e0-e766-11e6-80c2-30e57e57e05d_story.html?utm_term=.4617dbea44df\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post poll<\/a> after the January women\u2019s march reported 40 percent of Democratic women plan to be more involved in politics, compared to 25 percent of all adults polled. <\/p>\n<p>Stephen Duncombe, a professor of media and politics at New York University, wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/artisticactivism.org\/2017\/02\/affect-and-effect-artful-activism-and-political-impact\/\" target=\"_blank\">a 2016 essay<\/a> that modern protest was akin to performance. \u201cActivists [during the Civil Rights Movement] understood that reality needs to be staged in order to be widely seen, and protest must be made into an emotionally charged spectacle for injustice to be felt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Staging the spectacle of injustice is what brought actor-activist Jazm\u00edn Corona to Collaboraction for their current production, \u2018Gender Breakdown.\u2019 The show features 10 female-identified actors and calls out gender disparity in the theater scene while addressing issues of education and body image, the community and moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an actor, I have the privilege of telling a story in front of an audience for a certain amount of time,\u201d Corona said. \u201cThat\u2019s an opportunity that I don&#8217;t want to ever waste\u2026This is the chance that I have to affect whatever change I can. I can go to protests, I can write to my senators, I can do all of that, but as an individual, this is what I have inside of me that I can share.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Gender Breakdown is featured at the Flat Iron Arts Building through March 19.
