MILWAUKEE \u2013 The U.S. Speed Skating\u2019s team pursuit squad will feature a new member, an Oak Park native, on its three-man team in the 2018 Winter Games.<\/p>\n

Emery Lehman will replace Chicagoan Shani Davis, a five-time Olympian, for the team pursuit in Pyeongchang, joining Glenview\u2019s Brian Hansen and Joey Mantia on the team.<\/p>\n

Not that the 21-year-old needed any more pressure, but now he\u2019s tasked with filling the shoes of one of the most decorated speed skaters in U.S. history.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo try and fill the shoes is not something I think I can do,\u201d Lehman said. \u201cAll I can do is skate as fast as I can skate.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Tom Cushman, all-round coach of the U.S. Long Track Speed Skating team, said he and his staff searched for Davis’ replacement during the last two years.<\/p>\n

Cushman said Lehman won the vacant spot due to the multi-focused approach he has when he trains for the sport.<\/p>\n

“He\u2019s young, and he trains very hard,” Cushman said. “He focuses on the physiology, but also on the technical piece of it.”<\/p>\n

Lehman was an Olympian once before, in 2014, and competed in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races, finishing 16th and 10th, respectively.<\/p>\n

In 2018, he\u2019ll be competing in the 5,000-meter and in the team pursuit. The team pursuit event is the more complex of the two.<\/p>\n

The speed-skating team pursuit event mirrors the team-pursuit events in track cycling; one skater leads the three-man team, while the two following skaters push the skater in front of them.<\/p>\n

The biggest difference between the team pursuit and 5,000-meter races is the racers in the team pursuit will have help.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a three-man job,\u201d Lehman said. \u201cFront guy\u2019s got to keep the pace up. The guys in the back got to keep the pace with him, and push him a little bit. The guy in the back\u2019s got to rest and prepare to take his lead.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. Speed Skating team is trying to recapture its team-pursuit magic from 2010, when Team USA took silver in Vancouver. In 2014, the team-pursuit squad finished seventh, as was expected.<\/p>\n

Brian Hansen, who\u2019s made the 2010, 2014, and now 2018, team-pursuit squad, said pushing is the most significant technique for the U.S. team.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way we\u2019re going to do it, pushing is really important,\u201d Hansen said. \u201cPushing at the end, the last four laps, just hitting the beginning right and pushing at the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hansen also spoke highly of Lehman, who joined the team-pursuit two seasons ago, and praised how he\u2019s fit into the last spot on the squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been skating with Emery for a long time now,\u201d Hansen said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a steady transition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cushman said Hansen and Mantia both “really worked well to integrate emery into the team. ”<\/p>\n

Both Bleacher Report and the Chicago Tribune both listed Lehman as a \u201crising star\u201d speed skater in 2014.<\/p>\n

On his way to his second Olympics, Lehman can take the next step as that rising star in Pyeongchang by improving on the U.S. team pursuit\u2019s seventh place finish in 2014.<\/p>\n

Lehman doesn\u2019t know what to expect when he\u2019ll compete on one of the world\u2019s biggest sports stages.<\/p>\n

\u201cI skated faster this time around at world cups; I placed lower,\u201d Lehman said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what to expect going in. That\u2019s the fun part.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Lehman continues to improve his skating skills and speed, there will be disappointments along the way, and he plans to use every moment as a lesson.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a reason for a bad race, and a bad race is still training,\u201d Lehman said.<\/p>\n
