{"id":67530,"date":"2018-02-20T16:22:11","date_gmt":"2018-02-20T22:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=67530"},"modified":"2018-02-22T19:33:04","modified_gmt":"2018-02-23T01:33:04","slug":"south-side-wellness-salon-makes-acupuncture-affordable-to-more-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/south-side-wellness-salon-makes-acupuncture-affordable-to-more-people\/","title":{"rendered":"South Side wellness salon makes acupuncture affordable to more people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Yunyi (Jessie) Liu<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">Haji\u00a0Healing Salon in\u00a0Hyde Park,\u00a0about\u00a0a\u00a015-minutey\u00a0bus ride from the\u00a0Red Line,\u00a0can\u00a0be\u00a0challenging to\u00a0find\u00a0without help from a\u00a0friend.<\/p>\n<p>But customers entered the salon steadily on a recent Sunday morning and salon owner Aya-Nikole Cook greets them as they arrive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s\u00a0such a beautiful place,&#8221; says\u00a0Khadijah\u00a0Kysia, an acupuncturist\u00a0at the salon\u00a0who lives in Humboldt Park\u00a0on the West Side.\u00a0When\u00a0Cook invited her\u00a0to work at the salon and\u00a0provide\u00a0community acupuncture treatments, Kysia intended to reject\u00a0the offer\u00a0at the very beginning.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First, I was like, I&#8217;m not\u00a0gonna\u00a0come to this, because it&#8217;s too far,&#8221;\u00a0she says. But once she got there, she\u00a0changed her mind &#8211;\u00a0 the harmonious atmosphere\u00a0mirrors the salon&#8217;s motto, &#8221;We heal together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<iframe title=\"South Side Wellness Salon Makes Acupuncture Affordable To More People\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/256664082?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Haji\u00a0Healing Salon\u00a0is a vibrant social\u00a0wellness\u00a0enterprise\u00a0that provides yoga\/meditation, community acupuncture, bodywork and healing practices. Cook, a yoga teacher who fought to manage painful symptoms caused by uterine\u00a0fibroids for eight years,\u00a0created Haji Healing Salon in 2015, as a support program for\u00a0women living with the condition she had come to know so well.<\/p>\n<p>From her own\u00a0experience with\u00a0illness, surgery, and recovery, Cook\u00a0learned\u00a0that there are lots\u00a0amazing\u00a0healing practices\u00a0more of us could be integrating and benefiting from.\u00a0&#8220;If we\u00a0have\u00a0other, less invasive, effective and accessible options, I think surgeries could\u00a0become more of a last resort,&#8221;\u00a0Cook\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>Cook invited\u00a0Kysia\u00a0to\u00a0become one of a team of five acupuncturists who each provide service one day per month. The Haji Healing Salon&#8217;s Sunday Sanctuary program happens every Sunday, beginning with community yoga\u00a0 lead by Cook at 10 a.m. Community acupuncture and bodywork are offered from 12 to 3 p.m. by Kysia and Joshua\u00a0Bee\u00a0Alafia, a filmmaker\u00a0who\u00a0says he is\u00a0obsessed with Chinese kung fu.\u00a0Sundays are the busiest day of the week, serving a steady stream\u00a0of customers\u00a0until about 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Cook\u00a0says\u00a0her wellness center is open to everyone, but she wanted to prioritize affordable services for people of color and the under-resourced populations of the south side of Chicago. Neighborhoods here can be wellness desserts\u00a0as well as\u00a0\u00a0food desserts when compared to\u00a0bustling downtown\u00a0or\u00a0the North Side, Cook said.<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0a friend recommended that\u00a0Kenya Naylor, a psychotherapist,\u00a0visit\u00a0Haji\u00a0Healing Salon,\u00a0Naylor decided that\u00a0getting some wellness experience\u00a0would\u00a0make her more relaxed\u00a0and\u00a0provide\u00a0additional\u00a0healing resources\u00a0for her own\u00a0patients.\u00a0&#8220;I feel like physical health and spiritual health, all those things are connected to mental health. So I tried to figure ways to offer them other things that they can do,&#8221;\u00a0Naylor says.\u00a0Cook\u00a0heard\u00a0Naylor&#8217;s\u00a0words\u00a0and she\u00a0whispered \u201cyesss\u201d in agreement.<\/p>\n<p>With an established customer base\u00a0and a desire to offer\u00a0impactful services to more people,\u00a0Cook\u00a0is now preparing for a big move to 746 E. 79th St. in the Chatham neighborhood\u00a0this spring. All\u00a0yoga classes\u00a0will remain\u00a0$10 per hour.\u00a0Thai-style body work\u00a0and chair massage\u00a0sessions remain\u00a0$35 for a liberating 30 minutes.
