ROLLING MEADOWS \u2013 With the pomp and circumstance coming from the Winter Olympics, it\u2019s easy to forget the 2018 Paralympics compete just two weeks after.<\/p>\n

Athletes have trained and prepared to compete in five sports, and begin their Games on March 9.<\/p>\n

Illinois\u2019 three sled hockey players, Josh Misiewicz, Brody Roybal and Kevin McKee, were preparing in a different kind of way recently.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

USA Hockey hosted two benefit games last weekend at the West Meadows Ice Arena, with the team splitting in half for a friendly scrimmage.<\/p>\n

All proceeds would help the 2018 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey team families\u2019 travel costs to South Korea.<\/p>\n

The response was overwhelming, as according to USA Hockey spokesman Jon Gomez, more than 500 tickets were sold each night at $5 apiece.<\/p>\n

However, on Saturday attendees filled the 1,000-seat venue.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s awesome to have the support,\u201d Chicago native McKee said. \u201cObviously people want to come see the top of the game, so they came out to see us. That\u2019s definitely a big pump up for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not expect this at all,\u201d Northlake native Roybal said. \u201cI thought 50, 100, just like, my family and their friends would come out. It was crazy to see the support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roybal scored the white team\u2019s only goal in an irrelevant 4-1 loss to the blue team, which was more of a hard-hitting warm up than a friendly scrimmage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was fun to just test our skills, see where we\u2019re at and get a little warm up before the games,\u201d Misiewicz said.<\/p>\n

Misiewicz, a La Grange native who has been apart of Team USA since 2015, is preparing to compete in his first Paralympics.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

He said his teammates have shown him the ropes on dieting and training ahead of the Games, but his teammates say the former Division III hockey player doesn\u2019t need much help preparing for the Games.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have to tell that man anything,\u201d Roybal said. \u201cHe amazes me out on the ice. He knows what he\u2019s doing. I feel really confident with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Misiewicz\u2019s path to the Paralympics differs from his Chicago counterparts\u2019, as he became a double-knee amputee after being injured by an IED while serving as a U.S. Marine in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

For Misiewicz, the Paralympics is another way for him to represent the country he fought to defend.<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved being in the military, but after being injured it wasn\u2019t something I could do anymore,\u201d Misiewicz said. \u201cBeing able to put the USA jersey on, and represent them in the Paralympics is an amazing feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roybal and McKee both lost their legs due to congenital birth defects.<\/p>\n

Roybal was born without a femur in both legs, and McKee was born with sacral agenesis, or abnormal fetal development in the lower body.<\/p>\n

The three get to share ice time, as during the second half of last Saturday\u2019s benefit game they skated together on the same line for the white team.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have really good chemistry,\u201d McKee said. \u201cWe trained a lot this past summer and all this year together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJosh is great and Brody\u2019s just so fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

West Meadows Ice Arena even put up a Team USA Sled Hockey poster, which features the three Illinois skaters as if they\u2019re the face of the team.<\/p>\n

Wintrust Bank also sponsors Roybal and McKee as two athletes on \u201cChicago\u2019s Team\u201d for the 2018 Winter Games. Other sponsored athletes include five-time Olympic speed skater Shani Davis and gold medal-winning hockey player Kendall Coyne.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe city of Chicago being behind me, Wintrust being a sponsor for me, it\u2019s awesome to have all that support here in Chicago,\u201d Roybal said. \u201cIt means a lot when I\u2019m over there in Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n

The team left for South Korea on Friday, and will spend the week preparing to try and win their third-straight gold medal.<\/p>\n

McKee, Roybal and Misiewicz agreed their main competition would most likely be Canada, which they\u2019re expecting to face in the gold-medal game.<\/p>\n

Team USA and Canada are already know each other closely as they\u2019ve played twice in the month of February, splitting the two-game series with a 2-1 win on February 7 and a 3-0 loss on February 10.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Team USA has a 2-3 record against Canada in 2017, which pales in comparison to the rest of the international competition.<\/p>\n

At the 2018 Para Ice Hockey International Tournament in January, Team USA played Norway, Italy twice and Japan twice, and won all of those games by a combined score of 37-0.<\/p>\n

They did not allow a goal and averaged 7.4 goals per game, making Canada the team\u2019s main focus.<\/p>\n

As the sled hockey team came off the ice at West Meadows after their game, kids and adults alike surrounded the players.<\/p>\n

Spectators would interrupt ongoing interviews in order to ask for photos, autographs, or just offering words of encouragement.<\/p>\n

However, the players don\u2019t want their disabilities to take the spotlight, but rather that they\u2019re out to win gold.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just like any other hockey player,\u201d McKee said.<\/p>\n
