{"id":69243,"date":"2018-03-15T17:15:30","date_gmt":"2018-03-15T22:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=69243"},"modified":"2018-03-21T21:32:12","modified_gmt":"2018-03-22T02:32:12","slug":"campus-gunman-hoax-alarms-northwestern-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/campus-gunman-hoax-alarms-northwestern-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Campus gunman hoax alarms Northwestern students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Cade Shultice<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">Northwestern University students and community members breathed sighs of relief on Wednesday after the Evanston Police Department declared that the emergency alert issued earlier that day was a false alarm.<\/p>\n<p>Around 2:30 pm, the Northwestern University Emergency Notification System sent out phone calls, text messages and emails to students and staff members, warning them of a potential gunman on the Evanston campus and advising them to seek shelter.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Campus gunman hoax alarms Northwestern students\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/260310877?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>By 4:30 police determined that the alleged presence of an armed man was a hoax perpetrated by an unknown caller from outside Evanston, and gave the all clear to return to normal.<\/p>\n<p>But several students said they were shaken by the experience.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The incident took place on the same day of a nationwide school walkout in protest of gun violence.
