Singing and dancing, students and staff\u00a0dressed in colorful clothes to welcome the New Year.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrating the Chinese New Year has been a tradition since the school was founded in 1934, when Chinese weren&#8217;t permitted into the regular schools in South Africa.<br \/>\n<iframe title=\"Chinese festivals bring diverse students together at the Pretoria Chinese School\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/261010812?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69426\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69426\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-69426 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/03\/kids-interaction-p-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/03\/kids-interaction-p-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/03\/kids-interaction-p-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/03\/kids-interaction-p-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/03\/kids-interaction-p.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students from diverse backgrounds celebrate the Chinese New Year together.\u00a0(Xiaozhang (Shaw) Wan\/MEDILL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAs you see later on, most of the students taking part are not Chinese,\u201d said John Gelling, principal of the Pretoria Chinese School.<\/p>\n<p>Only 11 percent of the students in the school are Chinese while\u00a0 51 percent are African and 27 percent are white, according to\u00a0Gelling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody is taking part because it&#8217;s been part of their life at the school since they joined,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The students celebrate other Chinese festivals during the year, including\u00a0Chinese New Year, the Lantern Festival and the Dragon Boat festival.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from performances, students helped create all the New Year decorations, such as the banner, paintings and paper cuttings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the recent one or two weeks in the cultural classes, we provided students with an idea for the New Year decoration and leave the creative work to them,\u201d said Jennifer Neethling, one of the five Chinese teachers of Pretoria Chinese School.<\/p>\n<p>Various cultural classes and programs are provided for students to immerse themselves in Chinese culture.<\/p>\n<p>The drum group practices every morning and is the place for children interested in Chinese instruments. The school also has a Chinese Culture Club where kids learn Chinese dances.<\/p>\n<p>Lebone Simelane, 17, a 12th grade\u00a0South African student, has studied Chinese for three years and has been to China for the Chinese Bridge competition. She said she believes her new cultural connections are helping her in \u201cthe most amazing ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it should be implemented a lot more in South Africa so that people may experience what I am experience and be able to say \u201cI\u2019ve been on the Great Wall of China,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the best experience of my life. I will never forget it,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Mandarin, the official Chinese language, has always been a mandatory course in the school since its establishment,\u00a0Gelling said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s one of the standard requirements that the board and the Chinese community set for the school,\u201d said Gelling,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents choose to send their kids here so that they learn Mandarin,&#8221;\u00a0with\u00a0improving links between South Africa and China, Gelling said. &#8220;They can see where the economic future is going and the improvement in those talks between South Africa and China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simelane wants to be the president of South Africa in the future and believes Chinese culture will support her goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love politics so much and I think Chinese is helping me with this.
