Dahlia, a lifelong West Virginian, knows the stereotypes. \u201cBecause you seem so educated, and well-spoken, and articulate, you couldn\u2019t possibly be from Appalachia,\u201d she hears people thinking.<\/p>\n<p>But Dahlia plans to change all that, she said at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvu.edu\/\">West Virginia University<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/reedcollegeofmedia.wvu.edu\/\">Reed College of Media<\/a>, host to the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/reedcollegeofmedia.wvu.edu\/news\/2018\/10\/25\/wvu-reed-college-of-media-to-host-hackathon-on-diversifying-news\">\u201cMissing Voices: Diversifying the News\u201d hackathon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Born the day after the 2016 election, <em>100 Days<\/em> is an independent, nonprofit news outlet that shares content from Appalachia\u2019s diverse communities with regional, national and international media organizations. It incubated at the <a href=\"https:\/\/mediainnovation.wvu.edu\">West Virginia University Reed College of Media Innovation Center<\/a>, in collaboration with West Virginia Public Broadcasting and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralstrategies.org\/the-daily-yonder\">The Daily Yonder<\/a> of the Center for Rural Strategies in Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>As a native of Appalachia, Dahlia saw <em>100 Days<\/em> as an opportunity to redefine and reshape what people think of the area. \u201cThere is a whole other side to Appalachia that you are not seeing,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen people come to tell our story, they are really trying to tell the stories that are already established, which is that we are just a bunch of hillbilly folk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>News reports have dubbed Appalachia as \u201cTrump Country\u201d since the 2016 election. \u201cEverybody in the world was coming to West Virginia and doing stories about the coal-miners\u201d after Donald Trump promised to reinvigorate the coal industry, said Dana Coester, creative director and executive editor of <em>100 Days<\/em>. \u201cAnd we are frustrated with the national narration of our region that was really one-dimensional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before 2016, Coester and her colleagues had been working for two years trying to come up with an idea for their own digital news outlet, but it didn\u2019t work out. Then the election happened, and they decided to launch <em>100 Days<\/em> as a pop-up news site to cover the first 100 days of the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really took off. It grew audience really rapidly,\u201d said Coester. \u201cSo we decided to just keep it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Photographer Nancy Andrews\u2019s photo series\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysinappalachia.com\/100-days-100-voices\/\">\u201c100 Days, 100 Voices\u201d<\/a> was one of the projects that helped to showcase the scope of diversity in Appalachia when the website initially launched. Andrews traveled throughout the 13 states in Appalachia and took photographs depicting diversity. She showed the varied faces, passions, issues and opinions from around the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat really did kick off the entire 100 Days in Appalachia website,\u201d Dahlia said. \u201cWe are going to help you visually see that we are surprising you and that we are not what you think we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysinappalachia.com\/2017\/01\/28\/ask-muslim-appalachian-kurdish-roots-response-immigration-ban\/\">Sara Berzingi<\/a>, featured early on the website, was part of a 360-degree video series \u201cMuslim in Appalachia.\u201d The series invites viewers into the worlds of Appalachian Muslims navigating Muslim and Appalachian identity while challenging the stereotypes of both. Berzingi, a Muslim-Appalachian with Kurdish roots who has been calling West Virginia home for a decade, was asked in the interview about her response to immigration ban and her reflections on identity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72888\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72888\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72888 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/Sara-Berzingi-0235-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph of Berzingi wearing an American flag head scarf, taken by Nancy Andrews for her series \u2018100 Days, 100 Voices\u2019. (Nancy Andrews\/100 Days in Appalachia)\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/Sara-Berzingi-0235-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/Sara-Berzingi-0235-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/Sara-Berzingi-0235-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/Sara-Berzingi-0235-1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sara Berzingi wearing an American flag head scarf, photographed by Nancy Andrews for her series \u2018&#8221;100 Days, 100 Voices.&#8221; (Nancy Andrews\/100 Days in Appalachia)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe knew that she would not be the stereotype of Appalachia the rest of the world had been seeing,\u201d Coester said. \u201cIt\u2019s a way to provoke people into thinking differently about who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Appalachian Region, as defined in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc.gov\/appalachian_region\/theappalachianregion.asp\">Appalachia Regional Commission\u2019s authorizing legislation<\/a>, includes all of West Virginia and parts of 12 other states along the Appalachian Mountains: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>However, people view Appalachia through a concentric lens, according to Coester, and focus on the core story about Kentucky and West Virginia, the heart of what most people think of as Appalachia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe region is as diverse as the communities and counties and states it represents,\u201d Coester said. \u201cThe politics and issues and communities of southern Alabama are different than northern Alabama, and that\u2019s different than what\u2019s happening in Mississippi,\u201d she said. \u201cBut that woven together, all of those community stories actually tell a really rich American story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Appalachia&#8217;s stories are America\u2019s stories, Coester explained, and that\u2019s why <em>100 Days<\/em> has been trying to build the national audience. \u201cWe are not just talking to people in the region, we are talking to the rest of the world about the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Initially, <em>100 Days<\/em> was launched to push back on national sentiments that had reduced the region to narrow narratives. Now, national media are picking up and republishing the <em>100 Days<\/em> stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s exactly what we want to have happen,\u201d said Coester. \u201cThat means producers, photographers, writers from Appalachia are now being distributed on a national platform, and that make sure those voices are getting out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This locally conceived news outlet is still looking at the landscape of Appalachia. It will soon launch a community engagement series, <em>Sunday Suppe<\/em>r. Co-directed by food editor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysinappalachia.com\/2018\/05\/03\/a-conversation-with-w-va-chef-journalist-mike-costello\/\">Mike Costello<\/a> and religion editor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.100daysinappalachia.com\/author\/crystal\/\">Crystal Lewis Brown<\/a>, it aims to host dinners in real life homes with accompanying families and conversations to address some of the pressing issues that Appalachia is facing, such as gun control.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s now two years &#8211; nearly 730 days &#8211; since the Nov. 8, 2016 election. So <em>100 Days<\/em> clearly has a revised calendar.
