{"id":72917,"date":"2018-11-06T04:04:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-06T10:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=72917"},"modified":"2018-11-06T04:04:13","modified_gmt":"2018-11-06T10:04:13","slug":"chicagoans-urge-judges-to-follow-bail-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/chicagoans-urge-judges-to-follow-bail-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicagoans urge judges to follow bail laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Doug Greenberg<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">On October 30, 2018, protesters gathered in front of the Cook County Criminal Courthouse to petition Chicago-area judges to follow General Order No. 18-8A, a measure that implores judges to lower bail in cases where the defendant is financially unable to pay it. In the year since the order was passed, several local judges have refused to set bail at affordable levels in non-violent cases, causing many of the offenders to lose their jobs.
