She spoke from personal experience at an author conversation last week at Women and Children First book store.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe learned together that there are two types of girls: those who are pure and those who are impure,\u201d Klein read aloud from her book. \u201cThose who are marriage material and those who are lucky if any good Christian man ever loved them.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73142\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73142\" style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73142 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK1.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK1-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the start of the event, Klein read an excerpt from her book, &#8220;Pure.&#8221;\u00a0 (AnnMarie Hilton\/MEDILL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The purity movement emerged in the 1990s as a central teaching for young women in the \u201cwhite American Evangelical church.\u201d With shame as a driving force, this movement told young women that they needed to remain sexually pure by abstaining for any sexual thoughts or actions before marriage, and then becoming hypersexual once married, she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This rigid binary of pure and impure leaves girls and women with little room to make decisions about their own sexuality, she noted. Klein described it as a \u201cfalse choice\u201d between acting in a way that is acceptable in the eyes of the church or being deemed unworthy. Not only does this limit her choices, but this strips a woman of her agency. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73145\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73145\" style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73145 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK6.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK6-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK6-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK6-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Klein spoke candidly about her experience with the purity movement.<br \/>(AnnMarie Hilton\/MEDILL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Klein explained that girls brought up in the purity movement are only given one tool to navigate life\u2019s sexual situations. She described this tool as a ruler that draws an ill-defined boundary between pure and impure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou can\u2019t use that ruler to navigate violence,\u201d Klein said. \u201cYou can\u2019t use that ruler to navigate respect. You can\u2019t use that ruler to navigate life after marriage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instead, Klein would have appreciated a compilation of tools similar to a Swiss Army knife. These tools, she explained, would be a set of multipurpose values that could be applied to the unique sexual situations that arise in life. (AnnMarie Hilton\/MEDILL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chelsea Hosler, 29, who grew up in rural Pennsylvania, but now lives in Chicago, attended the event because a friend invited her. Hosler spoke candidly about her own experience growing up in the purity movement, and said she found the event &#8220;cathartic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pressure of purity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The weight of upholding a standard of purity is placed solely on the shoulders of the women and girls in the church. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cGirls and women are responsible for maintaining the non-sexuality of the entire community by not inspiring any sexual thoughts or feelings or actions in anybody,\u201d Klein said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Growing up with the purity doctrine, girls are taught to conceal their sexuality for the sake of the boys and men around them. Much of this is conveyed through the teachings of modesty. More specifically, Klein recounted multiple times when she was asked to change into different clothing so as not to be a \u201cstumbling block\u201d for the boys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen I was growing up, I definitely experienced not just being shamed for my own sexual thoughts and feelings and behaviors, but also shamed for the sexual thoughts and feelings and behaviors of men in my community toward me that I was said to have elicited by how I walked or talked or dressed,\u201d Klein said.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73143\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73143\" style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73143 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK2.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/11\/LKK2-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Attendees waited in line to speak with Klein about her new book.
