SAN JUAN \u2013 The typical comic book thriller culminates with a superhero fighting an evil villain. In Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\u2019s “La Borinque\u00f1a,” the title character fights not a mere villain but, rather, a hurricane.<\/p>\n

An art director, designer, and most recently a graphic novelist, Miranda-Rodriguez created La Borinque\u00f1a<\/a>, a female Afro-Boricua superhero who represents Puerto Rican culture and identity. His comics also address hurricanes and other environmental issues threatening the island.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe live in an era where people are consumed by popular culture, and have more conversations around it than they do around the real world,\u201d said Miranda-Rodriguez. \u201cSo I said, let me create a superhero, and use that as a vehicle to address real world issues\u2014the problems affecting real people.\u201d<\/p>\n

La Borinque\u00f1a translates to \u201cthe Puerto Rico woman\u201d in Ta\u00edno, the language of the island\u2019s indigenous people. It\u2019s also the name of Puerto Rico’s national anthem. The La Borinque\u00f1a of Miranda-Rodriguez’s comics is not only female,\u00a0 already rare in the comic book world<\/a>\u00a0where just 12 percent of protagonists are women, but also a person of color.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to create a superhero who was unapologetically patriotic,\u201d Miranda-Rodriguez said. \u201cOne who is steeped in mythology related to the island, connected to the island\u2019s actual history, and therefore give her a real connection to real people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miranda-Rodriguez was born in New Jersey and grew up in the Bronx, but lived in Puerto Rico during his formative years of 13 and 14.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many people who live in a space of duality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

La Borinque\u00f1a\u2014Marisol Rios De La Luz\u2014also lives in this space. In the comic, Marisol, an undergraduate student majoring in environmental science at Columbia University, leaves her home in New York City to study abroad for a semester in Puerto Rico. While exploring caves on the island Marisol encounters the Taino goddess Atabex, who grants her superhuman strength and the ability to fly and control storms.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cLa Borinque\u00f1a is such a powerful character,\u201d said Crystal Velasquez, author of the “Maya & Miguel” children\u2019s book series. \u201cIt was moving to see the recognition that we [Puerto Rican women] don’t have to look outside ourselves for someone to look up to.\u201d<\/p>\n

“La Borinque\u00f1a” was released in December 2016, nine months before Hurricane Maria. In the end, the antagonistic force that La Borinque\u00f1a fights is not a villain, but rather a hurricane that leaves the island leveled.<\/p>\n

\u201cHurricanes are ingrained in Puerto Rican popular culture\u2014there are popular songs, paintings, art\u2014always about hurricanes. It\u2019s part of our culture,\u201d Miranda-Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n

Not only are hurricanes a constant looming threat to Puerto Ricans; they have also faced a slew of other environmental issues in recent years. In 2015 an extreme drought crippled the agricultural industry<\/a>. The coastline is receding<\/a> due to rising sea levels. And Maria only exacerbated preexisting issues such as contaminated drinking water<\/a> and coal ash in the air<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Miranda-Rodriguez had already started on the sequel to “La Borinque\u00f1a” when Hurricane Maria hit. News of the storm left him devastated. \u201cI was kind of numb,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

Two weeks after Maria, Miranda-Rodriguez found himself attending Comic-Con in New York City. It didn\u2019t feel right, and all he could think of was the devastation on his beloved island, when Dan DiDio, the co-publisher of DC Comics, approached him and complimented his work.<\/p>\n

Miranda-Rodriguez thanked DiDio, then asked him what they were going to do for Puerto Rico. Within a few days they had agreed on a proposal\u2014an anthology comic book with the proceeds benefiting the island.<\/p>\n

\u201cRicanstruction,\u201d Miranda-Rodriguez\u2019s second book, was released in May, and 100 percent of its proceeds support organizations serving Puerto Rico. Many of its contributors are Latinx and female, including actress Rosario Dawson.<\/p>\n

In September the La Borinque\u00f1a Grants Program awarded $10,000 grants to nine Puerto Rican organizations<\/a> that promote health, climate change advocacy, youth empowerment and education. The intention of these grants is to empower Puerto Rico\u2014not in a colonial way\u2014but by enabling Puerto Rico-based, grassroots organizations to address needs they see in their own communities.<\/p>\n

Miranda-Rodriguez used La Borinque\u00f1a\u2019s character\u2014and her commitment to science, female empowerment and patriotism\u2014as a gauge for awarding the grants.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, La Borinque\u00f1a is the embodiment of all the brave women of color who are stepping up right now as real-life superheroes,\u201d Velasquez said. \u201cBottom line, she makes me proud as a woman and as a person of Puerto Rican descent.\u201d<\/p>\n
