Three out of Chicago\u2019s five mayoral candidates failed to offer specifics during a forum Tuesday on how they would provide more affordable housing if elected to office, but some at the event said they thought it was informative.<\/p>\n

Candidates Bob Fioretti, William \u201cDock\u201d Walls and Willie Wilson fielded questions on supervision<\/a> of the Chicago Housing Authority<\/a>, supplying communities with equal housing services and one-for-one replacement of public housing before an audience of roughly 500 people at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church in Bronzeville.
\n<\/p>\n

But with the exception of ideas for a responsive housing authority board, an economic development fund and better use of TIF savings, all refrained from specific steps if they were elected mayor.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can change things now if you come out and vote,\u201d Willie Wilson said in response to an inquiry about effectively implementing resources for a single-room occupancy ordinance.<\/p>\n

The audience was primarily made up of groups, such as the Metropolitan Tenants Organization, Jane Addams Senior Caucus and Logan Square Neighborhood Association.<\/p>\n

\n

Walls’ stance on housing<\/h1>\n

Incorporate affordable housing residents into Chicago Housing Authority board, build one unit of affordable housing for every two units of condominiums, provide housing vouchers to those in need<\/p><\/div>\n

During the forum, the audience\u2019s cheers for Wilson, who is a multi-millionaire, were interrupted twice by a co-emcee due to his perceived evasiveness on the issues.<\/p>\n

Based on applause and shouts, Walls, a former top assistant to Mayor Harold Washington, appeared to be a favored candidate. But in answering a question about communities\u2019 equal access to the housing authority\u2019s services, he instead discussed his daughter\u2019s foreclosure experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere ought to be a system in place such that the City of Chicago takes over that building and allows organizations like yours to manage those buildings so that they don\u2019t end up as boarded-up houses and ultimately end up as vacant lots,\u201d Walls said.<\/p>\n

Fioretti reminded the crowd multiple times that he already implemented affordable housing. But when asked what he would specifically do to ensure one-for-one replacement of public housing units, he discussed the shortcomings of other administrations.<\/p>\n

\n

Fioretti’s stance on housing<\/h1>\n

Better utilize TIF funds, create a more responsive Chicago Housing Authority board, rehabilitate vacant homes across the city<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cThe money\u2019s there to build, and they haven\u2019t,\u201d Fioretti said. \u201cCHA has the money, and they haven\u2019t. The TIFs that we established around, they haven\u2019t. I guarantee that we will make sure that it\u2019s one-for-one replacement like they started to say way back when.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the candidates\u2019 perceived lack of specific answers, some found the forum to be informative.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a lot of good views, and I know who I\u2019m going to vote for already,\u201d said Gregory Wilson, 59, who represented the Organizing Neighborhoods for Equality: Northside group.<\/p>\n

During the event, Wilson frequently waved a blue card, indicating that he favored a candidate\u2019s position. But he said he particularly enjoyed Walls\u2019 answers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope that they get this straightened out with CHA \u2018cause I\u2019m on the waiting list,\u201d Gregory Wilson said.<\/p>\n

\n

Wilson’s stance on housing<\/h1>\n

Establish an economic development fund, focus on senior citizens and businesses, get perspective of residents to better troubleshoot problems<\/p><\/div>\n

Co-emcee Miguel Suarez, 64, of the Chicago Housing Initiative and Logan Square Neighborhood Association, said he also considered the forum a success. He said his major concern for the incoming mayor is one-for-one replacement housing.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo much public housing has been demolished, and they\u2019re trying to put a band-aid on a big wound by giving out these vouchers and all this other good stuff,\u201d Suarez said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey need to start building public housing units at the same rate that they\u2019re taking them down. And that\u2019s not happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and fellow candidate Jesus \u201cChuy\u201d Garcia did not attend the forum.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s mayoral election is scheduled for Tuesday.<\/p>\n
