Weingarten<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">No one knew the building of Warren Avenue Congregational Church better than Rozell \u201cPrexy\u201d Nesbitt, whose first encounter with the church came as a 4-year-old in 1948 after his parents rolled him into the Sunday\u00a0 school with a broken leg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, the truth be told, I was the first black person in the building,\u201d said Nesbitt, now 74, whose parents would join the church soon after Nesbitt\u2019s inauspicious first visit.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly two decades later, \u00a0the same church welcomed the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1966 as the organization made the church <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.middlebury.edu\/chicagofreedommovement\/files\/2013\/07\/CFM40_Guide.pdf\">its headquarters<\/a> in their campaign to end slum housing.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Though the Voting Rights Act had been passed the previous summer after the Selma-to-Montgomery march, churches and government officials in Chicago were not eager to welcome King.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big black churches, and churches in general, were scared to death of [Mayor Richard J.] Daley,\u201d said Nesbitt. \u201cDaley did not want King in Chicago at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While home for the summer from Antioch College, at his mother\u2019s urging, Nesbitt volunteered with SCLC working out of the familiar West Side church, which was built in 1889 and now named the New Greater St. John Community Missionary Baptist Church.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-74523\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/12\/Nesbitt-3-untitled-22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"748\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/12\/Nesbitt-3-untitled-22.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/12\/Nesbitt-3-untitled-22-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/12\/Nesbitt-3-untitled-22-768x522.jpg 768w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/12\/Nesbitt-3-untitled-22-1024x696.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">Rozell \u201cPrexy\u201d Nesbitt (striped jacket) participates in a Sunday school lesson at Warren Avenue Congregational Church circa 1958. (Photo: Courtesy of Rozell Nesbitt)<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c[King] sat and listened to me\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That summer, in a march for integrated housing through Marquette Park, Nesbitt served as one of King\u2019s protectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was scared to death,\u201d said Nesbitt, who recalls angry white women throwing dog excrement as well as a stone that passed by him and hit King, knocking him to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrexy, I thought you were this great football player,\u201d\u00a0 Nesbitt recalls King saying in reference to his career as a running back and co-captain of the team at Francis W. Parker School.<\/p>\n<p>As King was whisked away in a car, Nesbitt and other marchers were put on buses by Chicago police officers, driven back to the safety of a black neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Nesbitt\u2019s volunteer work with SCLC included more than just protective services. He was used as a prospective homebuyer in an attempt to expose racially restrictive real estate practices.<\/p>\n<p>His work for SCLC also came after his year abroad at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, a trip that served as a valuable source of knowledge to Rev. King.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[King] sat and listened to me talk about Africa\u2026for about an hour and a half, two hours,\u201d Nesbitt said, \u201cand from then on he would always call me &#8216;Prex.&#8217; \u201d<\/p>\n<p>King was one of many that Nesbitt, an adjunct professor of history at Columbia College,\u00a0 has educated over the years about issues in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrexy really had an understanding based off his trip,\u201d said Basil Clunie, who met Nesbitt nearly 50 years ago while working with Nesbitt in the Coalition for Illinois Divestment from South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Nesbitt also leads educational tours of Southern Africa and Latin America through his organization <a href=\"http:\/\/makingtheroad.com\/\">&#8220;Making the Road,&#8221;<\/a> which he founded in 1980.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Prexy Nesbitt King 1968 by daweingarten\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F545155320&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxwidth=800&#038;maxheight=1000&#038;dnt=1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">Audio: Rozell \u201cPrexy\u201d Nesbitt recalls the unrest that erupted in the wake of the assassination of the Rev. Weingarten)<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cLeft the country on the run\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After graduating from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Nesbitt ended up back in Africa not by choice, but by circumstance.<\/p>\n<p>While pursuing a degree on a fellowship at Columbia University in 1968, Nesbitt walked out of the library and found himself in the middle of campus demonstrations. Predominantly white students were protesting over the Vietnam War and many of Columbia\u2019s black students were protesting the university\u2019s expansion into Harlem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was raised with a certain set of values and those values said you didn\u2019t turn your back on stuff,\u201d said Nesbitt, whose participation in the demonstrations resulted in the loss of his fellowship, causing him to leave school and be drafted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI totally opposed the war in Vietnam and left the country on the run,\u201d said Nesbitt, who headed back to Tanzania where he began working in Tanzania for the Mozambique Liberation Front, called FRELIMO.<\/p>\n<p>Despite not being willing to fight for the United States in Vietnam, Nesbitt expressed a willingness to fight with FRELIMO in the Mozambicans fight for independence from the Portuguese.<\/p>\n<p>Eduardo Mondlane, the founder and president of FRELIMO, said no.<\/p>\n<p>Mondlane, a Mozambican who had been married in Nesbitt\u2019s Warren Avenue Congregational Church while pursuing his master\u2019s degree from Northwestern University, told Nesbitt that he did not speak the languages needed to fight with FRELIMO.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Nesbitt worked for FRELIMO building schools and creating an educational program in Tanzania for the Mozambicans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cHe inspired us to accomplish more\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Upon his return to the United States, Nesbitt sought to educate people about the conditions in Africa, working with solidarity movements at campuses across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe [Nesbitt] inspired us to accomplish more than we thought we could,\u201d said Anne Evens, who met Nesbitt at Cornell University, where she was active in the student anti-apartheid movement.<\/p>\n<p>Sessy Nyman also heard Nesbitt speak about solidarity movements when she was a college student. After his talk at the University of South Carolina, Nyman applied for a job with the Mozambique Support Network in Chicago, where she worked with Nesbitt daily for several years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI consider him [Nesbitt] part of my family,\u201d said Nyman, who has worked on early childhood education issues and as a community organizer after leaving the Mozambique Support Network.<\/p>\n<p>For Nesbitt, educating others about solidarity movements did not stop with just college students.<\/p>\n<p>Harold Washington, Chicago\u2019s first African-American mayor, read Nesbitt\u2019s book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Apartheid-Our-Living-Rooms-Foreign\/dp\/0915987023\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1542307300&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=prexy+nesbitt&amp;dpID=41o9bMzVtOL&amp;preST=_SY344_BO1,204,203,200_QL70_&amp;dpSrc=srch\">Apartheid in Our Living Rooms: U.S. Foreign Policy and South Africa<\/a>\u201d \u201ccover-to-cover,\u201d according to Nesbitt, who worked in the mayor\u2019s office for a year and a half during Washington\u2019s tenure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Southern African struggles were a great school for me. \u2026\u201d Nesbitt said, reflecting on his lifelong commitment to activism and the strategies and tactics he learned there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cTake your time &#8216;Prex&#8217; \u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake your time Prex, take your time,\u201d King once advised Nesbitt, a college student at the time, who took the pulpit to address a large rally gathered to hear King in a South Side church.<\/p>\n<p>In dedicating more than five decades of his life to activism,\u00a0 Nesbitt has influenced change locally, nationally and internationally<\/p>\n<p>Without an integrated Warren Avenue Congregational Church, King and the SCLC likely would not have had a Chicago headquarters, given the city&#8217;s political climate at that time.<\/p>\n<p>While the Chicago Freedom Movement did not have the immediate success King and the SCLC might have hoped for, it did move the city forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat King did do was to set this city up for the mayoralty of Harold Washington,\u201d\u00a0 Nesbitt said. \u201cHarold wouldn\u2019t have won that election and wouldn\u2019t have been the mayor he was, had it not been for a lot of the groundbreaking stuff that Dr. King, SCLC, and the Union to End Slums did here in Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Less than a decade after Nesbitt\u2019s first Africa trip, in 1975 FRELIMO helped the Mozambicans gain their independence from Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>The wisdom that Nesbitt learned in his life of activism across Chicago and the world: \u201cListen to people.
