(Department of Labor, Lucy Ren\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wal-Mart\u2019s stock fell by 3.2 percent on Thursday after the announcement, which came as part of the company\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/secfilings.nasdaq.com\/filingFrameset.asp?FileName=0000104169%2D15%2D000006%2Etxt&amp;FilePath=%5C2015%5C02%5C19%5C&amp;CoName=WAL+MART+STORES+INC&amp;FormType=8%2DK&amp;RcvdDate=2%2F19%2F2015&amp;pdf=\" target=\"_blank\">earnings report<\/a> for the quarter ended on Jan.31.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are concerns about how the wage raise will impact their cost structure,\u201d said Ken Perkins, analyst with Morningstar. He opined that Wal-Mart was \u201cre-allying its workers\u201d and \u201cforcing its competitors to raise their wages\u201d to attract more qualified employees, according to Wal-Mart officials on the company\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/media.corporate-ir.net\/media_files\/IROL\/11\/112761\/4Q15\/FY15_Q4_earnings_transcript_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">conference call<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Wal-Mart lowered its outlook for fiscal year 2016 sales growth to be between 1 and 2 percent, versus the 2 to 4 percent provided in October. (Wal-Mart)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mark Miller, research analyst at William Blair &amp; Company L.L.C., wrote in a note that Wal-Mart\u2019s higher labor costs, or in the company\u2019s words, \u201cinvestment,\u201d could be viewed as \u201crecurring and defensive in nature.\u201d That suggests retailers are having to increase wages to attract the best employees.<\/p>\n<p>For the quarter ended on Jan. 31, Wal-Mart reported a rise in earnings per share to $1.53 from $1.34 a year ago, beating the consensus estimate of $1.526. When adjusted for the cost of litigation and the closure of 30 stores in Japan, Wal-Mart reported earnings per share of $1.61, above the analysts\u2019 consensus estimate of $1.54.<\/p>\n<p>Wal-Mart reported a 12 percent rise in net income for the quarter to $4.97 billion, or $1.53 per diluted share, from $4.43 billion, or $1.36 per diluted share, as customers gained spending power due to lower gas prices, and fuel profit increased at Sam\u2019s Club, a subsidiary of the retail giant.<\/p>\n<p>Revenue for the fourth quarter increased 1.4 percent to $131.6 billion from $129.7 billion, despite a negative impact from the strong U.S. dollar of approximately $2.6 billion. For the full year, revenue increased 2 percent to $485.7 billion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7488\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7488\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1yIzmtVXT1W9D1QSxaPc9BuFNyqEK0MofLxZH88vLhG8\/pubchart?oid=861383622&amp;format=interactive\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7488 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/chart-wal.png\" alt=\"Wal-Mart U.S. contributed to almost 60 percent of the net sales of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in fiscal 2015. (Wal-Mart, Lucy Ren\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sales in Wal-Mart&#8217;s international division fell 3.9 percent to $36.2 billion in the fourth quarter, but excluding the impact of the strong U.S. dollar on currency translations, sales in the quarter would have risen 3.1 percent, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is potential for growth in Wal-Mart\u2019s international markets,\u201d Perkins said, \u201cbut the company will continue facing the headwinds from the strengthening U.S. dollar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its earnings call, Wal-Mart International President David Cheesewright highlighted the company\u2019s expanding online presence, as e-commerce sales globally rose approximately 22 percent for the full year.<\/p>\n<p>Wal-Mart\u2019s stock closed at $83.52 on Thursday, down $2.77.<\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Associates at Wal-Mart U.S. expect pay raises of at least $1.75 above today\u2019s federal minimum wage in April.
