{"id":7499,"date":"2015-02-23T00:22:20","date_gmt":"2015-02-23T06:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=7499"},"modified":"2015-02-23T00:34:19","modified_gmt":"2015-02-23T06:34:19","slug":"after-35-years-red-army-finally-gets-its-due","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/after-35-years-red-army-finally-gets-its-due\/","title":{"rendered":"After 35 years, Red Army finally gets its due"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Ryan Lund<\/p>\n<p>Names like Kharlamov, Fetisov and Mikhailov may be unfamiliar to North American hockey fans, but they carry the weight of world championships and gold medals to 59-year-old Chicago hockey fan Arkady Dontsis.<\/p>\n<p>Dontsis remembers their names, and one of the greatest hockey teams ever assembled, the famed \u201cRed Army,\u201d the Soviet Union national ice hockey team.<\/p>\n<p>But while Dontsis remembers the team for its illustrious\u00a0list of accomplishments, the rest of the world remembers the game they didn\u2019t win, a 4-3 loss to the U.S. on Feb. 22, 1980.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Americans would go on to defeat Finland 4-2 and capture the gold medal, while the Soviets would eventually take home silver, demolishing Sweden 9-2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t know a lot about the NHL then, they never showed the games [in the Soviet Union] in the late 70s and 80s,\u201d Dontsis said. \u201cWe eventually got more acquainted to the NHL and their players, but the Soviet hockey players, everybody considered them the best in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, on the 35th anniversary of the \u201cMiracle on Ice\u201d the Red Army is finally getting its due.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Final Minute of the &quot;Miracle on Ice&quot;\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qYscemhnf88?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>ESPN revisited the game in a recently released documentary entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/30for30\/film?page=ofmiraclesandmen\" target=\"_blank\">Of Miracles and Men<\/a>,\u201d chronicling young forward Slava Fetisov and the Soviet national team\u2019s rise to dominance, while filmmaker Gabe Polsky took a similar approach with his film \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/sonyclassics.com\/redarmy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Red Army<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey really were celebrities, and everybody who knew anything about sports knew the names of those guys,\u201d Dontsis said. \u201cWe watched a lot of European and world championship competition. We watched a lot of hockey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The game began at 1 a.m. for Dontsis, who listened to the Soviet radio broadcast 70 miles from the Ukrainian capitol of Kiev, a world away from Lake Placid, N.Y.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody had any doubt that the Soviets were going to win,\u201d Dontsis said. \u201cFor them, it was young college American players, not NHL players, and everybody knew that. We were confident that they were going to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And they had every reason to be.<\/p>\n<p>Winners of 14 world championships and gold medalists in the previous four Olympics, the Soviets were hardly an unknown quantity in the west.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hockey world knew all about them, and the hockey world marveled at them,\u201d said former Team USA defenseman Jack O\u2019Callahan, now the president of Winnetka-based Beanpot Financial Services. \u201cIn the years leading up to Lake Placid, they would come back every few years to play a few teams, and they would just dominate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teammate John Harrington \u2013 who assisted on team captain Mike Eruzione\u2019s game-winning goal back in 1980 &#8211; praised both films for their portrayals of former Soviet hockey coaches Anatoli Tarasov and Viktor Tikhonov.<\/p>\n<p>Tarasov pioneered the Soviet team\u2019s graceful, team-oriented style of hockey, while Tikhonov went on to coach the team in Lake Placid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI liked them, I thought they were both very well done,\u201d Harrington said. \u201cI always enjoy listening to guys like Tarasov and Tikhonov and to see how they ran their teams.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7501\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7501\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/tarasov_Miracle35.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7501 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/tarasov_Miracle35-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"Anatoli Tarasov - considered the father of Russian hockey - was the architect behind the graceful, team-oriented style of play that led the Soviets to dominance in the 70s and 80s. (\u041a\u043b\u0443\u0431 \u0425\u0430\u0440\u043b\u0430\u043c\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0446\/Creative Commons)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The films present a fresh take on one of the most iconic moments in sports history, even for the players who lived it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that it was really well done, really well-produced,\u201d O\u2019Callahan said. \u201cIt\u2019s funny to see the other side of it. My experience for 35 years has been all positive, where the Russian guys have had the flip side of the coin there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, while players like Harrington and O\u2019Callahan have fond memories of the game, the tone of the film is decidedly more somber than Disney\u2019s 2004 picture \u201cMiracle,\u201d which tells the US team\u2019s story from its beginnings in Colorado Springs to its win in Lake Placid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that came across pretty clearly in the documentary \u2026 there\u2019s a little bitterness [from the Russians] some dissatisfaction there,\u201d O\u2019Callahan said. \u201cI was a little disappointed in some of that messaging that came across.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Dontsis the Soviet players had plenty of reasons for disappointment after settling for silver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Soviet Union, if you were not winning at hockey, it was considered very bad,\u201d Dontsis said. \u201cThey lost to the Americans, and it was the Cold War then, so it was intense at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dontsis hopes that films like \u201cOf Miracles and Men\u201d will help to educate hockey fans on the importance of a Soviet squad that was often vilified in the Cold War fervor that surrounded international hockey at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think most of the people who are interested in hockey, they don\u2019t know how good the Soviet team was in the 70s and 80s,\u201d Dontsis said. \u201cWith these kinds of shows and movies and documentaries, more Americans will know it was a good team that played different hockey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And while the two teams are eternally bound by the events of Feb. 22, 1980, Harrington and O\u2019Callahan have had little chance to interact with their Russian counterparts over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never met any of them, never talked to any of them,\u201d O\u2019Callahan said. \u201cSome other guys may have, but I never did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrington says that he interacted briefly with former Russian captain Boris Mikhailov while coaching in Switzerland several years ago, but while the two posed for a photo, Harrington is unsure what his Russian counterpart thought of the exchange.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was smiling, he wasn\u2019t too happy, so maybe he realized that I was one of the guys he played against in 1980,\u201d Harrington said.<\/p>\n<p>Harrington and O\u2019Callahan joined\u00a0the rest of the team Saturday for the 35th anniversary of the game, as the group reconvened in Lake Placid to commemorate the event and honor fallen teammate Bob Suter.<\/p>\n<p>Suter died in September at the age of 57 after suffering a heart attack in his home state of Wisconsin, the team\u2019s second casualty following a car accident that claimed the life of Herb Brooks back in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like when Herb Brooks passed away, it\u2019s a tough thing to have happen,\u201d Harrington said. \u201cWe always understand that we\u2019re getting older, but to have something happen like what happened to Herb or Bob, it was a big shock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team honored the former defenseman by raising Suter\u2019s jersey to the rafters at Herb Brooks Arena, the site of their famous upset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a really emotional moment,\u201d Harrington said. \u201cWe miss Bob, we really do. He was a great teammate and a great friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But now, as the members of Team USA return to Lake Placid to remember their lost teammate and commemorate their accomplishments, the game still brings back positive memories nearly four decades later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always a happy memory or a happy thought,\u201d O\u2019Callahan said. \u201cSo in a way it\u2019s uplifting. It\u2019s been 35 years of positive, uplifting stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for Dontsis, his hockey allegiances have shifted a bit in the 25 years since he and his family immigrated to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cheer for the United States,\u201d he said. \u201cI still cheer for [Russia] if the United States is not playing, but I am a fan of the American teams now.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">Photo at Top: The 1980 US Olympic hockey team is set to return to Lake Placid on Saturday for the 35th anniversary of their 4-3 win over the Soviet Union.
