(Lu Zhao/Medill)

“When I see adults, they frequently tell me they were fine until adulthood when they develop food allergies,” said Dr. Christina E. Ciaccio, assistant professor of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago, who didn’t participate in the study but also finds the same trend in her clinic. “It’s not surprising at all to me.”

Ciaccio regards the food allergy as a major public health concern that affects a large percentage of people and can happen at any stage of life. Common foods that cause allergies can include fish, nuts and milk. “We often assume that food allergy is specific to children, but what this tells us is that adults struggle with it as well,” Ciaccio said. “That is intriguing for us to think about as we determine what causes in this epidemic.”

So what might be the causes of adult-onset food allergies? Neither Yamane nor her doctor found the reason.

“I did not change my diet. I eat pretty healthy and have lost 85 pounds over the last three years,” she said. “Food allergies are inflammations.” But researchers are still searching for what triggers them.

The study didn’t provide an explanation either, but there are several possible theories, said the lead author of the study Dr. Ruchi Gupta, professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University.

“One thing we found – that women have a significantly higher rate of food allergies as adults. That’s not what we see in children,” Gupta said. “So it could involve something hormonal.”

Environmental and microbiome changes can also trigger new food allergies, Gupta said.
