{"id":76266,"date":"2019-02-16T21:31:10","date_gmt":"2019-02-17T03:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=76266"},"modified":"2019-02-16T21:31:10","modified_gmt":"2019-02-17T03:31:10","slug":"sounds-from-the-704-the-2019-nba-all-star-weekend-ultimate-playlist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/sounds-from-the-704-the-2019-nba-all-star-weekend-ultimate-playlist\/","title":{"rendered":"Sounds from the 704: The 2019 NBA-All Star weekend Ultimate Playlist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Andre Toran<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">CHARLOTTE, N.C.&#8211; The NBA and hip-hop are two streets that have formed an intersection as the league has become more accepting of the hip-hop community.<\/p>\n<p>The two have become intertwined, especially during All-Star Weekend, as rappers, performing artists and other celebrities flock to arguably the biggest sporting event of the year.<\/p>\n<p>As J Cole and Meek Mill are slated to perform on Sunday night at halftime of the 2019 NBA All-Star game, here\u2019s a look at some of the players\u2019 selection of \u2018go-to\u2019 songs for their pre-game warmups and this weekend\u2019s events.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>6 Man like Lou Will<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Drake - God&#039;s Plan\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xpVfcZ0ZcFM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One word: Drake.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian rapper, singer and songwriter headlines this weekend\u2019s playlist. As Spotify\u2019s most streamed artist in 2018 \u2013 according to Spotify Newsroom &#8212; Drake can be found on the phones and playlists of many NBA stars and All-star weekend participants.<\/p>\n<p>Or, you can find the four-time Grammy winner gracing the Toronto sidelines, as the Raptors\u2019 global ambassador. Or, in the barber shop chopping it up with close friend LeBron James. Or, wherever the closest winning team is playing, as he will surely be dressed in that team\u2019s attire.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, he\u2019s around and heavily involved in the NBA.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Drake racked up 8.2 billion streams, making him Spotify\u2019s most-streamed artist ever. His album \u201cScorpion\u201d was the year\u2019s most streamed album, with \u201cGod\u2019s Plan\u201d leading the way with one billion streams.<\/p>\n<p>When asked what some of their \u2018go to\u2019 songs are as they enter the arena or warmup on the floor, players such as Marvin Bagley and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander responded with one word. Not a song title. Not an album name. Just one word, one name: Drake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI listen to a lot of Drake,\u201d Bagley put it simply.<\/p>\n<p>And even though, Gilgeous-Alexander prefers not to bump music prior to tipoff, if he were to turn someone on it would be OVO\u2019s finest. That says something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything Drake rocks with me,\u201d Gilgeous-Alexander said.<\/p>\n<p>Enough said. Here\u2019s a Drake essentials playlist to get your vibe started.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Drake Essentials\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"encrypted-media\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/61lHxSdmf6rkcabKFDpcyE?si=ppKLVbQ2SsW2jE_aYkItFA\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bring em\u2019 out: No question \u2018go to\u2019 tracks of the weekend<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the NBA, consistency usually prompts longevity. Often, players follow certain routines on and off the court that they feel help their game to grow. This applies no differently to the music that they listen to on the regular, whether they\u2019re walking into the arena, during shootaround, or in the locker room before they run out the tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me I listen to the same stuff,\u201d Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young said. \u201cI\u2019m very OCD. I like listening to the same things. For me, \u2018What more can I say\u2019 by Jay-Z is my favorite. It\u2019s the last song I listen to before I go out on the court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Who better to listen to than HOV?<\/p>\n<p>The rapper has transcended the rap game and become a business mogul and social influencer in so many ways and grizzled (no pun intended) 11-year vet Mike Conley of Memphis won\u2019t stray too far from the influence of Jay.<\/p>\n<p>Conley prefers to stick to Kanye West\u2019s 2004 album \u201cCollege Dropout\u201d with \u201cNever Let Me Down\u201d \u2013featuring Jay-Z &#8212; being his primary song of choice.<\/p>\n<p>For fellow Young\u2019s teammate with the Hawks, John Collins\u2019 no-question go-to track holds sentimental value, and dates back to his AAU days. Two Atlanta artists changed the game for Collins: T.I. and Young Thug<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"About the Money\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gWKk5zGTwXg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I had a \u2018go to\u2019 (song), it\u2019s \u2018About the Money,\u2019\u201d Collins said. \u201cI remember hearing that song in one of my best AAU tournaments back when I was a kid. T.I., Young Thug, the track, the beat, everything \u2013 I think Young Thug sets the tone on that track, how he comes off the track and then after that T.I. comes in; it\u2019s my favorite song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A little change never hurt nobody, they say. But for these stars I\u2019m sure they\u2019d counter with, if it ain\u2019t broke don\u2019t fix it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Music in the Middle: J Cole and Nipsey Hustle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"J. Cole - MIDDLE CHILD (Clean)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N1gdYdyu_4E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jermaine Cole, otherwise known as J Cole, will headline Sunday\u2019s All-Star game halftime show with fellow performing artist Meek Mill. Cole is near and dear to the North Carolina community, hailing from Fayetteville \u2013 about 100 miles from Charlotte.<\/p>\n<p>Just as Cole occupies a place in the heart of North Carolina\u2019s hip-hop community and beyond, Cole is another mainstay, alongside Drake, on the pre-game playlist of Bagley.<\/p>\n<p>J Cole\u2019s \u201cMiddle Child\u201d can be added to this weekend\u2019s list, and as Bagley put it, \u201cif it\u2019s hot, im\u2019ma listen to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma suggests the addition of Nipsey Hussle\u2019s recently released \u201cRacks in the Middle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hussle released the track on Friday and it will serve as the lead single for his upcoming LP, which is expected to arrive later this year.<\/p>\n<p>This is the making of a banger alert, and Kuzma is here for all it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Wildcards: The weekend\u2019s most unexpected selections<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Though hip-hop dominates the music culture of the NBA, some players have made an exception to the trend by listening to other music.<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn Nets center Jarrett Allen said he is \u201cnot a big fan of hip-hop,\u201d and prefers to warm up to the 1999 platinum-selling EDM hit \u201cSandstorm\u201d by Darude.<\/p>\n<p>Also Joining this group is Sacramento guard De\u2019Aaron Fox. Though he favors hip-hop artist Saba and often listens to his hit \u201cPROM\/KING\u201d before games, Fox will also pull out some Beethoven prior to game time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn high school, my algebra teacher would always listen to classical music.\u201d Fox said. \u201cSo, I started listening to Beethoven, and still do it to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No matter the genre or collection of songs, NBA-All Star Weekend will always be a vibe.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Charlotte&#8217;s Spectrum Center is the primary venue for NBA All-Star Weekend 2019.
