Weingarten<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">Midway through her run for mayor, Amara Enyia relayed a question that a young girl asked her on the far South Side when she learned Enyia was running for mayor of Chicago. \u201cWow, how do you do that?\u201d the girl said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI looked at her and I sort of laughed,\u201d Enyia told the crowd at one of the many mayoral forums. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018You can too, why not?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Enyia, the director of the Austin Chamber of Commerce, sought to become Chicago\u2019s first African American female mayor and the city\u2019s youngest mayor in recent history. Her candidacy alone was a work of education, a work she finished Tuesday as she cast her ballot. She received\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/elections\/results-page\/?sslEnabled=true&amp;clkttl=1min\">8 percent of the vote<\/a>, finishing sixth in a field of 14. Weingarten)<\/div>\n<p><!--more-->\u200b<br \/>\n\u201cWe started this race with a vision for what Chicago could be and a determination to fight for that vision,\u201d said Enyia Tuesday night after the election\u2019s outcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not about me, it\u2019s about we,\u201d Enyia told supporters, \u201cso my charge is for us to continue in that spirit because it\u2019s a spirit that supersedes any individual. The future of our city is depending on our commitment to the values we hold dear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s changing the equation,\u201d said Zachary Ferguson, a South Side native and Enyia supporter, after the election results came in Tuesday night. \u201cShe\u2019s going to change the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people who have written the Constitution, their design was for \u201cWe the People,\u201d said Ferguson, a baby-boomer, who looked into Enyia\u2019s campaign after Chance the Rapper\u2019s endorsement. \u201c[Enyia] says \u201cAll people, all voices, one city. Weingarten)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Porchia Logan, a student at Kennedy-King College from the city\u2019s West Side, said she never had an interest in politics before this election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what I understand, [classmates] tell me that they like what she\u2019s saying and she\u2019s very grounded,\u201d said Logan, who attended Enyia\u2019s election watch party to see Enyia for herself.<\/p>\n<p>Enyia, 35, announced her candidacy in late August about a week before Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced he would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/city\/en\/depts\/mayor\/press_room\/press_releases\/2018\/august\/090418_PreparedRemarksMayorRahmEmanuel.html\">not to seek re-election on Sept. 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the Oct. 13 March to the Polls hosted by the Women\u2019s March Chicago organization, Aretha Hughes, a South Side native, worked to get signatures to get Enyia on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s fresh, she\u2019s young, she\u2019s new,\u201d said Hughes in October, when contrasting her with other city politicians, \u201cIt\u2019s like a breath of fresh air that could be brought to Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the October march, first-time organizer and Enyia campaign volunteer Amelia Mroczkowski, a recent college grad and Rogers Park native, pinpointed the biggest obstacles for Enyia in her pursuit to become Chicago\u2019s next mayor&#8212;publicity and media presence.<br \/>\nThree days later, Enyia was endorsed by Chance the Rapper in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Gtx_WzG_U8w\">a news conference<\/a> at City Hall covered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/arts-entertainment\/2018\/10\/16\/chance-rapper-is-not-running-mayor-chicago-heres-who-he-wants-you-vote\/?utm_term=.433a6d522bc2\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The additional recognition could not overcome all the obstacles.The campaign still had an outstanding $73,540 debt to the Illinois State Board of Elections from Enyia\u2019s unsuccessful 2015 mayoral run, a fine that would preclude Enyia\u2019s name from being on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Those fees coupled with the over 20 candidates competing for the requisite 12,500 signatures needed to get on the ballot before the Nov. 19 filing deadline were the next hurdles Enyia\u2019s campaign had to overcome.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76819\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76819\" style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-76819\" src=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/02\/ENYIA-SIGN-FINAL.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"801\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/02\/ENYIA-SIGN-FINAL.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/02\/ENYIA-SIGN-FINAL-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/02\/ENYIA-SIGN-FINAL-768x559.jpg 768w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/02\/ENYIA-SIGN-FINAL-1024x746.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A sign for Amara Enyia decorates the space at her election night watch party. Weingarten)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The financial support of rapper Kanye West, who\u2019s initial contribution of $73,540 matched the Enyia campaign\u2019s outstanding debt, allowed the work of the signature-gathering volunteers to pay off with a spot on the ballot for Enyia.<\/p>\n<p>As challenges to other candidate\u2019s signatures ensued and the race progressed, the field narrowed to 14 candidates, but for Enyia the campaign was about more than simply electoral victory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work started before this campaign, the work will continue after the campaign, regardless of the outcome,\u201d said Enyia at a Jan. 19 campaign event. \u201cThe goal is to win that\u2019s what we\u2019re in this to do\u2026but the bigger picture is that this [work for justice] is necessary regardless of who\u2019s on the fifth floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While questions about <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/news\/amara-enyia-tax-returns-student-loans-chance-the-rapper-chicago-mayor-election-2019\/\">Enyia\u2019s personal finances<\/a>\u00a0regarding unreported income and unpaid student loans arose late in the campaign, Enyia sought to influence other candidates towards her ideas in public finance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an interesting shifting that I\u2019ve been privy to as time has gone on and that is a success in some senses,\u201d said Enyia at the January event, citing another candidate who <a href=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/two-mayoral-candidates-propose-city-public-bank\/\">adopted the idea of a public bank<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As Enyia stepped to the stage, surrounded by family, to deliver her last speech of the 2019 campaign, she told supporters: \u201cWhen there is no peril in the fight, there is no glory in the triumph,\u201d stating that justice is not an event, but a process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday represents the culmination of a movement that will extend far beyond this election.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Amara Enyia makes her selections in the voting booth.
