{"id":7831,"date":"2015-02-24T13:47:42","date_gmt":"2015-02-24T19:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=7831"},"modified":"2015-02-26T04:24:59","modified_gmt":"2015-02-26T10:24:59","slug":"morning-election-turnout-low-cps-driving-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/morning-election-turnout-low-cps-driving-polls\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago election turn out hits recent low"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Laura Furr and Emily Hoerner<\/p>\n<p><strong>Updated at 11 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chicago voter turnout for the 2015 municipal election was the lowest it has been in recent history, beating out the 2007 low of 33.1 percent. <\/p>\n<p>According to the Chicago Board of Election&#8217;s unofficial summary 32.7 percent of the city\u2019s 1.42 million registered voters showed up at the polls Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the day, Chicagoans described the calm of the polling stations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was super quiet. It was like a library,\u201d said 34-year-old Chicagoan Whet Moser, who tweeted that he was the 122nd voter at 3 p.m. at the Smith Park voting site in the 26th Ward.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Voter 122 at 3pm.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Whet Moser (@whet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/whet\/status\/570328337555398659?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 24, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The popular Twitter hashtag #ChicagoElection2015 shows various accounts of low attendance across the city. Moser said he noticed that people on his own social media timeline were posting similar sentiments. <\/p>\n<p>Moser said he voted to fulfill his civic duty. He normally votes before or after work, but said he had to vote in the afternoon today. <\/p>\n<p>He said the low turnout was \u201ca little depressing,\u201d and credited to what he saw the lack of another serious mayoral contender. <\/p>\n<p>Marie Smith, who has been manning the polls since 5:45 this morning at the Martin Luther King Library, 3436 S. King Drive, in the 2nd Ward, said turnout has been low all day.<\/p>\n<p>With 30 years of polling experience, Smith said she has noticed this trend. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it was really contentious or big voting then you had a lot of turnout,\u201d Smith said \u201cThis one people are coming in mostly knowing who they are voting for and they have a commitment to that candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, those who did vote this earlier morning were largely motivated by issues surrounding education and Mayor Rahm Emanuel\u2019s decision to close 49 public schools in 2013. Many took to social media to decry the incumbent mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Yesenia Sotelo was the 22nd voter at her polling station in the 40th Ward around 7:45 this morning.  The 35-year-old Chicago native said she was surprised by the low turnout given the attention the election has drawn in her community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been so many political signs up for so many weeks\u201d Sotelo said. \u201cI was joking, \u2018How could I ever sleep through this?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sotelo said that the vacant Lyman Trumbull Elementary School, on the corner of Foster and Ashland avenues, is a constant symbol of the disappointment she feels with the mayor.  She tweeted this personal response after she voted.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Passed one of the 49 closed CPS schools on my way to my polling place. Voted for Chuy Garcia. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ChicagoElection2015?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ChicagoElection2015<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Yesenia Sotelo (@silverbell) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/silverbell\/status\/570220843164237825?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 24, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have any children in CPS, but I hope to one day. I believe everyone in this city knows somebody that has been affected by the closings,\u201d Sotelo said.<\/p>\n<p>Julio Burgos, a 28-year-old first-time voter, said he cast a ballot for the incumbent mayor\u2019s opponent Jesus \u201cChuy\u201d Garcia in the 38th Ward this morning.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/Juliob11\/status\/570192704145108994<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, my wife, she\u2019s a teacher and she works for the city of Chicago, so we\u2019re trying to get Rahm Emanuel out,\u201d Burgos said.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia, who is backed by the Chicago Teacher\u2019s Union, is largely seen as Emanuel\u2019s most serious competition.<\/p>\n<p>Others on Twitter, like Sarah Ji, tweeted about their disdain for the school closure and the mayor in general.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rahm&#39;s legacy: closing schools and mental health clinics; what&#39;s next?
