I duck. <em>Click click<\/em>. I take two steps back, one to the left. <em>Click click<\/em>. I lift my camera. Focus. Click the shutter once, twice more, and spin around, clutching my camera to my chest and catching a stream of cold water on my back. I\u2019m rapidly getting soaked, but my camera is dry.<\/p>\n<p>With eye-catching decorations, reverent religious ceremonies and near-constant water fights, this past week\u2019s Khmer New Year celebration is every photographer\u2019s dream \u2013 and nightmare. Siem Reap, on the other hand, comes alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually, people don\u2019t tend to stay in the capital city or in the urban areas,\u201d Sok said. \u201cThey usually travel to the provinces of their origin. The people you witnessed at the Royal Garden could have come from different places. It\u2019s typically spent visiting loved ones, catching up on personal news and simply enjoying each other\u2019s company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second day, usually, people go to visit friends and family, relatives,\u201d Sok said. \u201cThey go to each other\u2019s houses, and they stay there. They have a fun time, good time together. But the sentiment is the same: reunion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, the meaning of Khmer New Year [is a] kind of celebration to join with family and friends,\u201d said Tony Yon, a School for Field Studies program assistant. \u201cWe are relatively small, so we have a lot of memories with our friends, with our village \u2013 it doesn\u2019t matter old or young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-79380\" src=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/04\/8-IMG_0623.jpg\" alt=\"Khmer New Year\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/04\/8-IMG_0623.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/04\/8-IMG_0623-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/04\/8-IMG_0623-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/04\/8-IMG_0623-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Vearak Loeng Sak, the third day of the New Year, is a day of respect and repentance. Additionally, in the past, people would spritz others lightly with perfumed water during the New Year as a way to bless them and wish them good luck \u2013 an act that is part of many traditional monk blessings. And that was the sign of blessing you, of good luck, good health, safe travels, fun times, things like that,\u201d Sok said. \u201cThat is not going to make you soaked to the skin. That\u2019s not. But then it, as the globalization is influencing the society, that kind of activity evolves to more and more and more and more aggressive behavior.
