{"id":80226,"date":"2019-04-13T19:30:19","date_gmt":"2019-04-14T00:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=80226"},"modified":"2019-06-05T17:32:16","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T22:32:16","slug":"guam-residents-demand-change-there-is-no-planet-b","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/guam-residents-demand-change-there-is-no-planet-b\/","title":{"rendered":"Guam residents demand change: \u201cThere is No Planet B\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Text and photos by Hannah Magnuson<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">About 60 residents gathered at Paseo Stadium in Agana, Guam, on Saturday, April 13, in an act of solidarity with the island\u2019s natural resources.<\/p>\n<p>As Earth Month hit mid-swing, they carried homemade signs that said things like, \u201cThere is No Planet B\u201d and \u201cCertified Tree Hugger.\u201d From local advocacy leaders to college students and schoolchildren, they assembled to participate in the second annual March to Protect Mother Earth.<\/p>\n<p>The march came at a time when the U.S. territory is under considerable strain: forces including invasive species, coral bleaching and wildfires threaten the small Pacific island\u2019s natural resources and wildlife while its consumption and population remain sky high.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we love, we can save,\u201d Senator Sabina E. Perez announced to the crowd, after marching alongside the community members.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Perez is one of several newly elected legislators pushing forward an agenda bent on reevaluating Guam\u2019s resource management and adaptation strategies. The Guam legislature has a host of bills under consideration, including a mandate for the Guam government to purchase energy-efficient products and electric vehicles, funding programs to address invasive species and creating a task force to strategize around the island\u2019s oil disposal. Perez supported a slew of bills protecting Guam\u2019s natural resources in the weeks leading up to the march, including a controversial bill she authored to ban scuba spearfishing. Climate change has already impacted Guam through the coral bleaching episodes that killed about one-third of the island\u2019s staghorn corals. The island is also vulnerable to erratic precipitation and devastating typhoons. \u201cThat 1.5 marker\u2014our lives depend on that,\u201d Voacolo said, referring to the goal set by the Paris Agreement to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels. \u201cIn the [U.S.], it can be hard to connect climate change with its impacts, but not here.
