{"id":8139,"date":"2015-02-24T18:44:08","date_gmt":"2015-02-25T00:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=8139"},"modified":"2015-03-02T09:44:47","modified_gmt":"2015-03-02T15:44:47","slug":"video-chicagos-electric-refuse-truck-first-in-the-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/video-chicagos-electric-refuse-truck-first-in-the-country\/","title":{"rendered":"VIDEO: Chicago&#8217;s electric refuse truck, first in the country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Jennifer Leonard<\/p>\n<p>Chicago is the first city &#8211; not only in the United States but in North America &#8211; to own an electric refuse truck.\u00a0Drive Clean Chicago, an incentive program funded by\u00a0The Department of Transportation, is trying to make Chicago\u00a0more sustainable by helping the city implement hybrid and electric vehicles into its\u00a0transportation system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.drivecleanchicago.com\/Default.aspx\">Drive Clean Chicago<\/a> works with Chicago fleet owners and offers voucher programs to\u00a0make the purchase of\u00a0alternative fuel vehicles more accessible and affordable.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>New York and Atlanta are looking into adopting an electric vehicle in their fleets as well. For many other cities also interested in the technology, an electric refuse truck\u00a0is still not\u00a0affordable.<\/p>\n<p>The electric prototype was a $1.2 million investment for Chicago.\u00a0For now, the truck remains a single piece. But with an increase in production comes a\u00a0decrease of the market price.
