On October 13, 2002, Great Britain\u2019s Paula Radcliffe set the Chicago Marathon course record and a world&#8217;s record for a woman runner with a time of 2:17:18.<\/p>\n<p>Coming just one day after Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge broke the two hour barrier by completing the Vienna marathon in 1:59:40, Kosgei\u2019s world record wraps a historic weekend of distance running for Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI come here to run my own race,\u201d Kosgei said.\u00a0 \u201cI have been training good. (Junie Burns\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kosgei says she is proud to have contributed to the accomplishments of her country, and with hard work and diligent training, women should have no problem setting new world records and breaking the 2:10:00 barrier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will take time, training, hard work,\u201d Kosgei said.\u00a0 \u201cI think 2:10:00 is possible for a lady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a sprint to the finish line, 2019 Boston Marathon champion Lawrence Cherono edged out the rest of the pack earning another marathon victory for Kenya with a time of 2:05:45\u00a0 Defending champion Mo Farah of Great Britain who returned to Chicago, but fell behind the front elite pack early in the race. (Junie Burns\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tensions were high at the 42nd Annual Chicago Marathon.\u00a0 With ideal race conditions in the cool fall weather, speculation soared about the potential for breaking the longstanding course records.\u00a0 The men\u2019s record still stands and was set in 2013 by Dennis Kimetto of Kenya, and the women\u2019s record had been in place from 2002 until today\u2019s race.<\/p>\n<p>For the wheelchair division, the Chicago Marathon was the qualifying race for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games.\u00a0 The top two male and female Americans could earn their spot on the Paralympic team if they finished fast enough to meet elite status qualifications for entering the race. (Bank of America Chicago Marathon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI know my limits more than I did [last year] and know more about strategy,\u201d Romanchuk\u00a0 said.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t like to make any assumptions about any race, but we\u2019ll see!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ultimately earned his spot by winning the men\u2019s race in a landslide victory, finishing more than three minutes before the rest of the elite pack with a time of 1:30:26.<\/p>\n<p>Joining Romanchuk for the 2020 Paralympic Games from the women\u2019s division are current Chicago Marathon record-holders Tatyana McFadden and Susannah Scaroni who placed second and fourth, respectively, behind Swiss para-athlete Manuela Sch\u00e4r.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe marathon is really all about experience,\u201d said fourth place female finisher and top female American runner Emma Bates of Idaho. \u201cI really wanted to do a full marathon so that I could learn more about myself\u2026 I need to be in a race that I have women right next to me and women ahead of me to learn how to keep my composure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the Olympic trials just four months away, Chicago also marked an essential check point for elite distance runners.\u00a0 While some runners choose not to do a full marathon so close to the trials, others find it an essential part of preparation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredible to be here and it\u2019s so surreal,\u201d Bates said.\u00a0 \u201cWhat better marathon than the Chicago Marathon.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81662\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81662\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-81662\" src=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/10\/Photo-6-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Marathon_2019\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/10\/Photo-6-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/10\/Photo-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/10\/Photo-6-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/10\/Photo-6.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81662\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spectators gather on the Marshall Suloway Bridge to cheer on runners in the 2019 Chicago Marathon.
