(Jin Wu\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the challenges for voter engagement in Chinatown go beyond low turnout. As a community for immigrants, lack of citizenships is one of the key issues that made the election advocacy more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany times when you approached a man on the street and encouraged him to register (for voting), he would tell you he doesn\u2019t vote because he\u2019s not citizen,\u201d said Paul Yee, precinct captain for the 6th precinct. \u201cAnother reason people don\u2019t vote is they think it takes too much time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These two scenarios led to an interesting scene in Chinatown: most of the voters today were seniors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8329\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8329\" style=\"width: 1030px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/DSC_8454_jpg.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8329\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/DSC_8454_jpg.png\" alt=\"King Shun Moy, 91, votes today at 14th Precinct in the 25th Ward. (Jin Wu\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAmong the 150 voters today, so far, 80 percent of them are Asian-American seniors,\u201d said Katrina Herring, election judge at the 18th precinct in the 25th Ward. \u201cAnd they don\u2019t have any language barrier here. We have staff here who can speak Mandarin, Cantonese, and some other Asian languages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Chicago&#039;s Chinese Americans meet barriers for election engagement\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/120540425?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Fiona Feng works as a community organizer at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CBCACChicago\">Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community<\/a>, a not-for-profit organization that encourages Chinese American citizens to vote. She said encouraging Chinatown residents to participate is a big and on-going project. A group of volunteers went out into the community, knocked on doors, and make phone calls to register new voters and remind others to go to the polls Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people in Chinatown don\u2019t see the meaning of voting. They don&#8217;t buy into the idea,\u201d she said. \u201cActually the municipal election is even more relevant to voters\u2019 lives because [the] alderman is the one who takes care of their daily needs.\u201d If the Chinese Americans can accept this idea, they would understand that \u201cvoting can get their voices heard,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that Chinese immigrants don\u2019t want to spend much time on this because they have their own problems such as paying the rent, finding a better job and their kids\u2019 education,\u201d Feng said. \u201cHowever, they don\u2019t really see that voting actually can help them on these. They just don\u2019t get the long-term effects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because most of the residents emigrated from China, where they have never voted, so they also don\u2019t have the \u201cmindset of voting,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s number of registered voters in Chinatown decreased to 2,156, down 12 percent after steady increases in 2007 and again in 2011.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8334\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8334\" style=\"width: 426px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/Untitled.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8334\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/Untitled.png\" alt=\"The number of registered voters in Chinatown dropped 12 percent in 2015. (The Chicago Board of Elections, Jin Wu\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAfter several years of voting, some people just gave up the idea,\u201d Feng said. \u201cThey think politicians are so corrupted and nothing has been changed even when they voted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For those Chinatown residents who have picked up on the idea of voting, the language barrier still prevents some from knowing the candidates and understanding their policies, Feng said.<\/p>\n<p>Yinghai Pei, cook at a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown, decided to vote in this election for the first time after living in the U.S. for 15 years. \u201cI think Chicago is getting better and better, so I finally decided to come out and participate in voting,\u201d he said in Mandarin. However, due to lack of understanding of the election, he had no idea who he wanted to vote for. \u201cI\u2019ll just follow my wife\u2019s idea, vote whomever she votes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Three polling stations in Chinatown drew few voters\u00a0Tuesday morning.
