{"id":83195,"date":"2019-12-10T10:57:48","date_gmt":"2019-12-10T16:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=83195"},"modified":"2019-12-10T10:58:48","modified_gmt":"2019-12-10T16:58:48","slug":"pop-up-shop-in-pilsen-supports-women-with-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/pop-up-shop-in-pilsen-supports-women-with-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Pop-up shop in Pilsen supports women with cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Esther Bower<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">ELLAS pop-up shop in Pilsen provides apparel for the community at discounted prices, with all funds supporting women with breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The thrift shop is located inside <a href=\"https:\/\/resurrectionproject.org\/\">The Resurrection Project<\/a> and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9-5 p.m. ELLAS hopes to extend business hours soon, according to Juanita Arroyo, a shop worker. The shop started on the sidewalk but moved to its current storefront location after strong community support.<\/p>\n<p>All profits at ELLAS go to provide resources, including items\u00a0 women with cancer need during and after treatment.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Pop-up shop in Pilsen supports women with cancer\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/378573637?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cThe proceeds of the store is to help other survivors going through treatments,&#8221; Arroyo said. &#8220;If they need any help with special bras, prosthetics, transportation; those are the [resources] we give women that are going through treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ELLAS, \u2014 which stands for En La Lucha A Sobrevivir or\u00a0 \u2018In The Fight To Survive\u2019 in English \u2014 consists mostly of women who have beaten cancer and now want to give back and support others going through similar battles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Spanish community, it\u2019s taboo to talk about cancer sometimes,\u201d Arroyo said. ELLAS tries to bridge that gap for women and remind them that they don\u2019t have to deal with cancer on their own.
