{"id":84932,"date":"2020-02-06T15:10:35","date_gmt":"2020-02-06T21:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=84932"},"modified":"2020-02-07T14:46:53","modified_gmt":"2020-02-07T20:46:53","slug":"chicago-curling-clubs-embrace-the-ice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/chicago-curling-clubs-embrace-the-ice\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago curling clubs embrace the ice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Leah Vann<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">During an otherwise miserable Chicago winter, local curling clubs are hosting classes to teach people about the ancient sport.<\/p>\n<p>Curling is like life-sized shuffleboard on ice, where players slide large stones and melt the path ahead to drive them toward a target,\u00a0 accumulating points. Its origins date back as far as 1511 in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Although the sport has been around for centuries, it wasn&#8217;t until 1998 that it became an Olympic sport.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago-area curling clubs such as Windy City Curling, Chicago Curling Club, Second City Curling Club and Exmoor Curling Club are coming together this winter to host &#8220;Learn to Curl&#8221; classes, encouraging people to learn the sport and\u00a0 generate interest.<\/p>\n<p>The clubs came together to host Learn to Curl classes on Jan. 8-10 and Jan. 22-24 at Gallagher Way, but continue to host weekly classes at their own clubs through April.<!--more--><br \/>\n<iframe title=\"CurlingVideo2\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/389267431?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: The Chicago Curling Club hosts a Learn to Curl event on Jan. 23 at Gallagher Way.
