{"id":8562,"date":"2015-02-25T15:07:47","date_gmt":"2015-02-25T21:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=8562"},"modified":"2015-02-25T15:07:47","modified_gmt":"2015-02-25T21:07:47","slug":"affordable-tickets-quality-hockey-a-winning-combo-for-wolves-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/affordable-tickets-quality-hockey-a-winning-combo-for-wolves-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Affordable tickets, quality hockey a winning combo for Wolves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Sara Romano<\/p>\n<p>Wolves\u2019 season-ticket holder Grace Garritano can remember the first game she and her husband Rob ever attended.<\/p>\n<p>It was Game 7 of the 1998 Turner Cup championship series.<\/p>\n<p>The couple was up in the \u201ctriple-upper nosebleed seats\u201d of a sold-out Allstate Arena.<\/p>\n<p>And the Wolves defeated the Detroit Vipers to clinch the IHL league championship.<\/p>\n<p>The Garritanos were hooked.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a phenomenal game,\u201d Grace said. \u201cIt was standing room only. It was affordable, and it was fun. The only reason we didn\u2019t get season tickets immediately was because we both worked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Touting affordable tickets and winning hockey, the Wolves, who joined the <a href=\"http:\/\/theahl.com\">American Hockey League<\/a> in 2001 when the IHL folded, have consistently ranked among the top three of the 30-team AHL in attendance since the mid-2000s.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8565\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8565\" style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/Attendence1.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8565\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/02\/Attendence1.png\" alt=\"Since the mid-2000s, the Wolves have ranked among the top teams in the AHL. To date this season, the team is second.\u00a0 (American Hockey League, Sara Romano\/Medill).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe year we were launched was almost the perfect year,\u201d said Mike Gordon, Wolves\u2019 president of business operations. \u201cWe were able to come in and be something new and different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur owner [Don Levin] wanted to bring affordable hockey to Chicago and that\u2019s what he did. That was the dream and passion of what he wanted this team to represent in Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wolves\u2019 inaugural season of 1994-\u201995 coincided with the NHL lockout that caused the cancellation of the season. And the timing was an undeniable advantage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would never wish an [NHL] labor stoppage, it\u2019s not good for the sport,\u201d Gordon said. \u201cThat being said, in business you have to be positioned to take advantage of any situation that presents itself. We were ready. We were set. (American Hockey League, Hockeydb.com, Sara Romano\/Medill).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With the Blackhawks struggling on the ice and in the midst of a 10-year skid in which they missed the playoffs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hockeydb.com\/nhl-attendance\/att_graph.php?tmi=5218\">nine times,<\/a> frustrated Hawks fans were eager to embrace the new team. The Wolves were the perfect alternative for the Garritanos, who said they had enough of Hawks\u2019 chairman Bill Wirtz\u2019s ownership style.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they got rid of [Jeremy] Roenick, I said I am never going to watch the Hawks again,\u201d Grace said. \u201cThere was so much emphasis on the owner making money not on putting a good team on the ice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jim and Lorraine Smalley, Wolves\u2019 season-ticket holders since that first year, expressed similar sentiments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were going to a lot of Hawks games, but they had out-priced themselves for us,\u201d Jim said. \u201cSo when the Wolves started, a buddy and I said \u2018We\u2019ve got to get season tickets.\u2019 They have that affordability of being able to get season tickets and come see good hockey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though prices have certainly increased for both teams since the 1990s, the Wolves remain the more affordable option for the Chicago hockey fan. <a href=\"http:\/\/chicagowolves.com\/tickets\/ticket-plans\/alpha-wolf-full-season\">A 2014-\u201815 Wolves\u2019 season ticket<\/a> starts at $380, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ticketsnow.com\/NHL\/InventoryBrowse\/Chicago-Blackhawks-Tickets-at-United-Center-in-Chicago-3-6-2015?PID=1584994\">one premium ticket<\/a> through StubHub for a single Blackhawks game could cost at least that much.<\/p>\n<p>The Wolves have consistently paired that affordability with a quality product on the ice. The team has never had a losing season in franchise history, a fact on which general manager Wendell Young prides himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It] is absolutely incredible, because a lot of times things are out of your control with injuries and call-ups and sometimes the parent team doesn\u2019t have a good draft and you don\u2019t have good prospects coming in,\u201d he said. \u201cTo have a winning season every year, that\u2019s the pride of the organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEverything in our organization\u2014on the hockey side, our marketing, our tickets, our PR and our game presentation\u2014is off the charts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Wendell Young, Wolves General Manager<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That on-ice success certainly translates to success at the box office, according to Gordon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople come into this arena expecting good, competitive, quality hockey,\u201d he said. \u201cThe fact that we\u2019ve never had a losing record means we are able to provide that on any given night. I think that if the product on the ice changed, yes it would definitely have an effect on [attendance].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although hockey is undoubtedly the focal point of the team\u2019s marketing efforts, it is not the only selling point. The Wolves\u2019 game presentation and game operations are unparalleled in the AHL, and even in the NHL, according to Young.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything in our organization\u2014on the hockey side, our marketing, our tickets, our PR and our game presentation\u2014is off the charts,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got great entertainment for the dollar. To have a winning team and bring that kind of entertainment every night, it\u2019s pretty amazing what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wolves are particularly known for their pre-game fireworks show and player introductions, which were honored as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagowolves.com\/news\/releases\/3839-chicago-wolves-honored-for-best-team-introductions\">Best Team Introductions<\/a> in professional sports by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gameops.com\/\">Gameops.com<\/a> in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the beauty of our product is we can be different things to different people,\u201d Gordon said. \u201cYou and I can come to a game and have completely different experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wolves cater to both the \u201chockey nut\u201d and the typical family outing, Gordon elaborated.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cTo have a winning season every year, that\u2019s the pride of the organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Wendell Young, Wolves General Manager<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, [everyone] can walk away feeling you got your money\u2019s worth, which is what you want and why you come back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Nikolis, executive vice president of marketing and business development of the AHL, pointed to the Wolves as a model franchise in the league.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are very well-run. They commit resources in terms of staff and technology. They are geared at delivering a great product and bringing fans to the building,\u201d Nikolis said. \u201cIt\u2019s been that way since they joined the league, and it remains that way today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wolves rank second in the league in attendance with an average of 8,236 fans per game, including eight games with crowds of more than 10,000, compared to <a href=\"http:\/\/theahl.com\/stats\/schedule.php?view=attendance\">the AHL average<\/a> of approximately 5,500 per game.<\/p>\n<p>With the AHL continuing to see overall gains in attendance throughout the league, the Wolves set the standard for the AHL, according to Nikolis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo carve out that niche in a city like Chicago \u2026 it takes a real commitment from the top, from your owner, from your team president, in terms of staffing and resources to creating that type of culture to take on that opportunity and not shy away from it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have nothing but positive things to say about the job they\u2019ve done there with the Wolves and I certainly don\u2019t see any reason why it\u2019s not going to continue going forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">Photo at Top: More than 11,500 fans saw the Wolves defeat the San Antonio Rampage in overtime on Sat.
