The referendum vote is non-binding, but it&#8217;s another loss for Koch Industries-owned <a href=\"http:\/\/aboutpetcoke.com\/about-kcbx\/\" target=\"_blank\">KCBX Terminals Company<\/a>, which has been engaged in a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/city-council-acts-to-limit-pet-coke-storage-in-chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\">battle with City Hall <\/a>over the handling of the dusty black piles.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Olga Bautista and her fight to ban pet coke in Chicago\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/120640795?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The vote comes on the heels of KCBX\u2019s February 19 announcement that it will work to discontinue pet coke storage at the terminals along the Calumet River. The North Terminal, at the 3200-block of East 100<sup>th<\/sup> Street, will close within five months.<\/p>\n<p>KCBX will continue to operate the South Terminal, at 10730 South Burley Ave., but not as a storage facility. &#8220;By the June 2016 [city] deadline, product piles will be removed, with the product being transferred in a covered conveyer system\u00a0directly to transport vessels and barges,&#8221; according to a Feb. 19 company statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese announcements represent a big win for the neighbors of the piles; their vigilance and outcry forced action,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/setaskforce.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Southeast Environmental Task Force<\/a> Executive Director Peggy Salazar in a joint statement released Wednesday with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Natural Resources Defense Council.<\/a> \u201cBut make no mistake, this fight is not over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the public health department had declared it would require KCBX to cover the piles by June 2016. The company requested a variance that would allow construction to be completed in late 2017. <a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/extension-denied-pet-coke-piles-must-be-covered-by-june-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">The city denied the company\u2019s request February 16.<\/a> Last week, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">BP<\/a> announced that it will stop shipping pet coke across the state line from its refinery in Whiting, Indiana, to the Chicago facilities.\u00a0\u00a0Pet coke will continue to be transported through the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect we\u2019ll have to make some adjustments to the services we provide our customers but we hope operating this way will allow us to remain in business,&#8221; said KCBX President Dave Severson in the Feb. 19 statement.\u00a0 Severson affirmed the company&#8217;s commitment to staying in Chicago while respecting city bylaws.
