{"id":87228,"date":"2020-02-29T18:16:21","date_gmt":"2020-03-01T00:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=87228"},"modified":"2020-05-15T12:03:28","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T17:03:28","slug":"illinois-braces-for-potential-coronavirus-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/illinois-braces-for-potential-coronavirus-outbreak\/","title":{"rendered":"Illinois braces for potential coronavirus outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Henry Ren<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">Illinois is preparing for a potential coronavirus outbreak after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned on Tuesday that some spread of the virus in the U.S. is expected.<\/p>\n<p>Coronavirus cases have been confirmed in 53 countries, infecting more than 6,000 people outside of China, according to the World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/situation-reports\/20200229-sitrep-40-covid-19.pdf?sfvrsn=7203e653_2\">situation report<\/a> on Saturday. In the U.S., the CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2020\/s0229-COVID-19-first-death.html\">confirmed<\/a> the first COVID-19 death in the Seattle area, while California, Oregon and Washington State have identified four cases of unknown origin, indicating that the virus could be spreading within U.S. communities.<\/p>\n<p>In reaction to CDC\u2019s Tuesday announcement, the Illinois Department of Public Health released a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dph.illinois.gov\/news\/illinois-taking-preventative-action-limit-spread-coronavirus\">statement<\/a> this week stating that Illinois was taking \u201call preventative steps available\u201d to limit the spread of coronavirus, though the current risk remained low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile COVID-19 is not spreading in communities in Illinois or the U.S., there is evidence of community spread in several countries around the world and IDPH is committed to working across local, state, and federal agencies to ensure Illinois is prepared,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>As of Saturday night, Illinois has <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=http-3A__www.dph.illinois.gov_news_state-2Dillinois-2Dpublic-2Dhealth-2Dofficials-2Dannounce-2Dnew-2Dpresumptive-2Dpositive-2Dcovid-2D19-2Dcase-2Dillinois&amp;d=DwMFaQ&amp;c=yHlS04HhBraes5BQ9ueu5zKhE7rtNXt_d012z2PA6ws&amp;r=Y6RmKNeqfCYNy2dqZAoa2B292RQGGh58E1B4vmI8KDs&amp;m=WtGzzwAlQYXk04JOh4KORJXjqojWn1WRPZbfh6zpBtc&amp;s=cUZAUsJJQCZIlRo3GvxtGkDXu4cYuD2n0PNIEtgeNrk&amp;e=\">identified<\/a> three coronavirus cases, two involving a couple where one spouse had been exposed abroad. They have recovered and are released from home isolation, while the third patient has been hospitalized in isolation, according to IDPH. Several of the banquets to celebrate the Chinese Spring Festival were canceled due to worries that the virus might spread during gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there is a balance between giving people accurate information and not making people too worried,\u201d McKibben said. \u201cBusinesses are hurting because folks are not coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allison Romer, director of development and communications of the Chinese American Service League, said her agency has increased janitorial cleaning operations in its Chicago building at 2141 S. Tan Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur janitorial staff is working increased hours to make sure that all the surfaces are disinfected regularly,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The agency also translates alerts and educational materials from the IDPH into Chinese, which are disseminated to its staff and other organizations serving Chinese immigrants through print and social media.<\/p>\n<p>As of Saturday, Illinois had only two confirmed coronavirus cases. Both patients recovered and were released from home isolation, IDPH <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dph.illinois.gov\/news\/public-health-officials-announce-two-chicago-patients-released-home-isolation-cdc-guidance\">announced<\/a> on Feb. 15.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Oluwadamilola Adeyemi, an infectious disease specialist at Northwestern Medicine, said educating the public to take basic hygiene is an important precaution under the current situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEducation, education, education.\u201d he said. \u201cIf you are sick, don\u2019t go out.
