{"id":8967,"date":"2015-02-26T14:06:52","date_gmt":"2015-02-26T20:06:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=8967"},"modified":"2015-02-26T14:06:52","modified_gmt":"2015-02-26T20:06:52","slug":"from-chinatown-to-bloomingdales-chicago-celebrates-chinese-new-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/from-chinatown-to-bloomingdales-chicago-celebrates-chinese-new-year\/","title":{"rendered":"From Chinatown to Bloomingdale\u2019s: Chicago celebrates Chinese New Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Kate Morrissey<\/p>\n<p>Despite the snow that rattled rush-hour drivers Wednesday evening, the Phoenix Restaurant hosted a who\u2019s who of Chinatown\u2019s business and political leaders for one of the many celebrations of Chinese New Year happening across Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese New Year, more accurately referred to as <a href=\"http:\/\/afe.easia.columbia.edu\/special\/china_general_lunar.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Lunar New Year<\/a>, began Thursday, and, according to Raymond Chin, the chairman of the <a href=\"http:\/\/chicagochinatown.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chinatown Chamber of Commerce<\/a> and Wednesday\u2019s host, the parties can last up to a month. (Kate Morrissey\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cChina is becoming a world power in international commerce, and the business community followed suit,\u201d Chin said. \u201cOther communities jump in to celebrate. It\u2019s another holiday. Who invented Christmas, but everybody celebrates it right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even the Magnificent Mile got in on the action. (Kate Morrissey\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bloomingdale\u2019s general manager, Carolyn Edward, said that the company wanted to recognize the number of Chinese and Chinese Americans who shop there. She said the company has even made a specific effort to hire Mandarin-speaking staff.<\/p>\n<p>Gene Lee, the founder of the Chicago Chinatown Special Events organization that puts on the annual Chinatown parade, said he was flattered by Bloomingdale\u2019s interest in Chinese culture and Chinese patrons. (Kate Morrissey\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to Lee, the citywide celebrations, department store or otherwise, help business in Chinatown as well as the entire Chicago area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re taking it to another level, helping us to promote the Lunar New Year and our culture,\u201d Lee said. \u201cI think it\u2019s important not only for Chinatown but also to the city of Chicago with residual benefits to the state of Illinois that we continue to draw visitors through tourism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The celebration is scheduled to continue Sunday with the Chinese Fine Arts Society\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/chinesefinearts.org\/event\/chinese-new-year-lantern-celebration-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">lantern festival at Navy Pier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: As part of Lunar New Year tradition, Raymond Chin, chairman of the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, feeds a red envelope to a lion at the Phoenix restaurant celebration.
