{"id":89960,"date":"2020-05-07T16:14:38","date_gmt":"2020-05-07T21:14:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=89960"},"modified":"2020-05-08T10:41:06","modified_gmt":"2020-05-08T15:41:06","slug":"preserving-a-coffee-lifestyle-in-the-notable-cafes-of-buenos-aires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/preserving-a-coffee-lifestyle-in-the-notable-cafes-of-buenos-aires\/","title":{"rendered":"Preserving a coffee lifestyle in the &#8216;notable&#8217; caf\u00e9s of Buenos Aires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Xinyi Zhang and Yilin Xie<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"final\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/416356410?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>BUENOS AIRES \u2014 Fifteen years ago, Nestor Pichelli decided to change careers and found himself helping preserve a mainstay of life in this capital city: the caf\u00e9 notable, or historic coffee shop. \u201cThe coffee culture in Argentina is a lifestyle,\u201d he said, as he sat among tables full of patrons at Caf\u00e9 Tortoni, one of the city\u2019s oldest \u201ccaf\u00e9s notables,\u201d and a magnet for tourists. \u201cIt is a mode of how people interact and talk about life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ornately decorated Caf\u00e9 Tortoni \u2014 with dozens of artifacts hanging on its walls \u2014 has a history going back more than 160 years. Before it became a destination for international tourists, it had long been a social meeting place for artists, writers and politicians in Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>Caf\u00e9 El Bander\u00edn is another of the city\u2019s classic neighborhood coffee bars. Its history is told through the wall of pennants and pictures from soccer teams given to owner Mario Riesco over many decades.<\/p>\n<p>Riesco isn\u2019t betting his bar on the lure of its history. He is seeking a younger clientele, with original and novel drinks and specials. He hired Agustina Sarni to help bring in a more diverse, neighborhood crowd, many of whom have become regulars at this cozy coffee bar.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: In the afternoon, almost every caf\u00e9 is full of customers.
