Several health care professionals have said that a recently released CDC report<\/a>, which revealed that on average, six people die from alcohol poisoning each day in the United States, while jarring \u2013 doesn\u2019t show the full societal cost of excessive drinking.<\/p>\n

According to the CDC report released earlier this year, researchers found that the majority of people dying are middle-aged, white males who aren\u2019t alcoholics.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The CDC gathered information for this study from the National Vital Statistics System. “There were changes in coding used for alcohol poisoning deaths that we thought might allow us to get a more complete picture of the problem,” said Dr. Robert Brewer. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Experts were quick to point out that the report doesn\u2019t include deaths in which alcohol poisoning is a secondary factor, such as strokes or car collisions brought on by consumption of alcohol.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing the report didn\u2019t necessarily speak to were alcohol related injuries,\u201d said Sarah Suzuki, a licensed clinical social worker and substance abuse counselor at Chicago Compass Counseling.<\/p>\n

Substance abuse counselor Joslyn Jelinek also said there are more deaths that occur as a result of alcohol than the data examined in this study suggests.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not just the biological that is\u00a0responsible\u00a0for mortality.\u201d Jelinek said. \u201cIncreased alcohol use is\u00a0always\u00a0associated with risk of violence to self\u00a0or others as well as car crashes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The author of the study warned that there are other deaths occurring as a result of excessive drinking, but those deaths were not taken into account.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe looked at deaths where alcohol poisoning was the primary cause of death,\u201d said Dr. Robert Brewer, director of the CDC alcohol program and coauthor of the study. \u201cBut there aren\u2019t just alcohol poisoning deaths, there\u2019s also motor vehicle deaths and cancers,\u201d Brewer added.<\/p>\n

Dr. Brewer emphasized that there is a relationship between binge drinking and deaths caused by alcohol poisoning.<\/p>\n

Illinois has one of the highest numbers of binge drinkers in the country with 22 percent of adults who self-report having four or more or five or more alcoholic beverages at least once in the last month, according to America\u2019s Health Rankings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite the high number of binge drinkers,\u00a0Illinois has a lower rate of \u00a0the alcohol poisoning deaths than most other states .<\/p>\n

The study found that many deaths occur in the west and New England. Alaskan Natives and American Indians were largely affected by alcohol poisoning deaths. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

According to Dr. Brewer, this may be because so many Illinoisans live in the Chicago metro\u00a0area.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe tended to see higher rates of alcohol poisoning deaths in New England and states more in the West. Living in a more geographically remote area and having less access to hospitals is a bigger risk factor,\u201d Brewer said.<\/p>\n

Although there are fewer alcohol poisoning deaths in Illinois, Suzuki, who specializes in Moderation Management at Chicago Compass Counseling, said she thinks alcohol related injuries, and motor vehicle incidents could be higher in Illinois than in other states.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though it looks like we are getting away with something because there are more binge drinkers and less alcohol poisoning events, it always comes back around in some way for us,\u201d Suzuki said.<\/p>\n

Health care professionals said they hope that this report will raise awareness among the general public and save lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur feeling is that deaths due to alcohol poisoning can be prevented and this is a call to action,\u201d Brewer said.<\/p>\n
