{"id":91129,"date":"2020-06-19T06:19:24","date_gmt":"2020-06-19T11:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=91129&#038;preview=true&#038;preview_id=91129"},"modified":"2020-06-25T12:31:12","modified_gmt":"2020-06-25T17:31:12","slug":"kayla-caudle-impacts-lives-one-basketball-bounce-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/kayla-caudle-impacts-lives-one-basketball-bounce-at-a-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Kayla Caudle impacts lives one basketball bounce at a time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Caroline Kurdej<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Medill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a reason the hallway leading to Doug Bruno\u2019s office is decorated with hard hats, lunch pails and pictures of steelworkers. \u201cI want my players to walk out the door here, knowing there\u2019s a real-life world out there,\u201d Bruno said.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla Caudle, a rising sophomore on DePaul University&#8217;s women\u2019s basketball team, brings a contagious blue-collar work ethic to every day of practice, regardless of her station on the Blue Demon hierarchy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like work ethic is contagious inside of practice, the willingness to be a servant is also contagious,\u201d Bruno said. \u201cThat she cares about serving her fellow humans is contagious as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caudle\u2019s personal philosophy reflects in her double major of Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies and Political Science. Her social justice roots intertwine with DePaul\u2019s Vincentian mission.<\/p>\n<p>Bruno reflects DePaul\u2019s Vincentian values in his belief that true leadership is founded on service. \u201cShe is a true service leader,\u201d Bruno said.\u00a0Caudle\u2019s service extends into not only the local Chicago community, but hundreds of miles overseas.<\/p>\n<p>DePaul\u2019s basketball players aren\u2019t just talented athletes, \u201cthey\u2019re players that are even better people,\u201d Bruno said, \u201cand value what St. Vincent de Paul is all about \u2014 service to others.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><figure style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP+Media+Folder+-+medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-12-at-3.01.34-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"358\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kayla Caudle playing basketball on a mission trip in Uganda at the St. Jerome COVE Primary School. (Courtesy of the Caudle family)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m an able-bodied, healthy basketball player,\u201d Caudle said, \u201cwho has the opportunity in the world. What am I doing with that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caudle\u2019s family has had orphanages and churches in Haiti for generations \u2014 Kayla\u2019s \u201cgreat grandfather, times five,\u201d from her mother\u2019s side was the emperor of Haiti. Caudle directly descends from Toussaint L\u2019Ouverture, the leader of the Haitian independence movement during the French Revolution. \u201cSo my family believes,\u201d she said with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Empowering children with education<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Kayla\u2019s mother, Ruth, died in 2012 from cancer of unknown primary origin when Kayla was just 10 years old. \u201cGrowing up, she devoted her entire life to helping other people,\u201d Caudle said. Ruth started by addressing the dire need for education because of the immense disparity in schooling and the educational system. In 2001, Kayla\u2019s parents decided to build the Spirit of Truth school, which began with 30 kids. Now, they\u2019ve grown to 500-600 kids.<\/p>\n<p>Without education, the cycle of poverty continues. And yet, so many parents don\u2019t have the money to send kids to school. Not to mention, many families depend upon their kids as a source of income, and can\u2019t afford to lose it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Haiti, it\u2019s not your right to go to school,\u201d Kayla said, \u201cit\u2019s a privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Education isn\u2019t at the forefront of the country\u2019s funding policies; reflected by the lack of government-funded schools. Roughly 90% of primary schools in Haiti are private and managed by communities, religious organizations or NGOs such as Spirit of Truth, which provides its kids with a free education, lunch and school supplies. (Sonya Martin\/Sonya Martin Photography)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cKnowing that she cared about other people more so than herself is really eye-opening to me,\u201d Kayla said.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth shines through in the way Kayla looks at the world. Her mother&#8217;s legacy lives on long after her death. The formerly Spirit of Truth Schools are now under the <a style=\"font-size: 16px\" href=\"https:\/\/togetherforhaiti.org\/\">Together for Haiti<\/a> umbrella. The nonprofit continues its mission in putting an end to child poverty and trafficking. by empowering children with education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey take after their mom\u2019s heart,\u201d Brian Caudle said of not only his daughter Kayla, but also her older brother Corey, 20, and younger sister Sophie, 14.<\/p>\n<p>When Ruth was alive, she instilled the spirit of giving within her kids. They didn\u2019t feel the need to give each other gifts for Christmas. Instead, they would help out a Haitian family in need by providing them with enough food and cooking oil for a few months.<\/p>\n<p>Last Christmas, the Caudle kids pooled their savings together to feed 400 families. The Christmas before that, they visited their own family in Haiti and spent the night in the orphanage, equipped with new shoes, blankets and medical supplies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow am I changing someone else\u2019s life? How am I thinking about someone else, besides myself?\u201d Caudle asked.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The spirit of giving lives on\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of the newer initiatives are \u201cvillage homes,\u201d located in Ferrier, close to the Dominican Republic\u2019s border. The town is a high-traffic risk area. Kayla describes the community of homes built for children who are in danger of sex trafficking, exploitation or other forms of crimes against humanity. Many times, the children are malnourished, sick and in need of a safe space to call their home.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla\u2019s first steps were taken at 13 months while visiting Haiti. Ruth was thrilled. \u201cI tell Kayla that\u2019s where she mastered the motor skills necessary for Bruno\u2019s fast-paced offense,\u201d Brian said with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>That fast-paced offense resulted in a shower of confetti following DePaul&#8217;s &#8220;Three-Peat&#8221; victory at the Big East Conference Championship win over Marquette on March 9. Just days later, a new reality hit Caudle. She didn&#8217;t know the &#8220;craziest week of her freshman year&#8221; would ensue the celebration.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday night, after an &#8220;amazing experience&#8221; and being a part of a championship team, Bruno gave his team two days off.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<figure>\n<p><figure style=\"width: 462px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP+Media+Folder+-+medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-12-at-2.15.43-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"462\" height=\"346\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kayla Caudle celebrating in a shower of confetti after DePaul\u2019s &#8220;Three-Peat&#8221; victory at the Big East Championship win over Marquette on March 9, before the NCAA shut down all of collegiate athletics for the rest of the year (Brian Caudle)<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Wednesday, news circulated that March Madness might take place, strictly with family members and without fans.\u00a0 The Blue Demon ladies were receiving updates by the hour. And the updates grew progressively worse.<\/p>\n<p>The NBA season was canceled, and the Caudle sensed something worse would be coming for her freshman year career.<\/p>\n<p>While Caudle was devastated when March Madness was officially called off, she kept her head up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We knew it had to be canceled,&#8221; Caudle said. &#8220;But at the same time, what we&#8217;re giving up is such a small price for why we&#8217;re doing it, and what we&#8217;re trying to do. This could save people&#8217;s lives by not being together, we don&#8217;t really know.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the pandemic, the Caudles have teamed up to challenge a new cause. They frequent <a href=\"https:\/\/beacon-place.org\/\">Beacon Place<\/a> in Waukegan where they purchase and donate food to the community center. that provides emergency support to local families in need.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Active on the basketball court and in the community\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Aside from being active on the basketball court, the Caudle family has also been civically engaged.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My kids have a unique perspective on race as they had the opportunity to witness the difference in treatment between their parents; a mom constantly under suspicion and a dad moving around with relative impunity,&#8221; Brian Caudle said.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the reason Caudle and her siblings attended Black Lives Matter protests in Vernon Hills and Buffalo Grove was because of the racism and discrimination their mother frequently faced \u2014 from security guards at malls tracking her moves, to being denied seating at restaurants and receiving declarations of being called savage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91308\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91308\" style=\"width: 367px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-91308\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP+Media+Folder+-+medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/FullSizeRender-300x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/FullSizeRender-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/FullSizeRender-768x760.jpg 768w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/FullSizeRender.jpg 828w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91308\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kayla, Sophie and Corey Caudle at a Black Lives Matter protest in Buffalo Grove. (Brian Caudle)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy family is half white, half black,&#8221; Caudle said. &#8220;But being half white doesn\u2019t take away from the injustices we still face because of our skin color.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Caudle made a Black Lives Matter sign and placed it in the front yard of her white majority neighborhood. Her intention was to start the conversation, or &#8220;even make people uncomfortable.&#8221; Whether someone is walking or driving by, perhaps they&#8217;ll think about its meaning. Her actions encouraged four other families to do the same and put up signs in support of the BLM movement.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever challenges the Caudle family faces, they band together to tackle adversity in stride.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The heart of a champion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Back in Bruno\u2019s office, the coach moseyed over to his wall and stopped in front of a picture of a horse. \u201cDo you know anything about Zenyatta?\u201d Bruno asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZenyatta was a female horse,\u201d Bruno said, \u201cand she ran against the guys. She\u2019s the best female horse athlete ever, and the only race she ever lost was a Breeder\u2019s Cup Classic in 2010, an equivalent to the Kentucky Derby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The TV mounted in Bruno\u2019s office wall played the video clip of Zenyatta\u2019s last race, for what must have been Bruno\u2019s hundredth time.
