Due to the pandemic, the recent performance was held via Zoom. (Photo from Zoom by Rodricka Taylor\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn the midst of this year, it\u2019s especially important to make this happen whatever way we could do it,\u201d said Nile Lansana, 23, a Rebirth poet who read his poem \u201cI Am Not Your Negro.\u201d His work highlighted racial injustice, the struggles Black people face with the pandemic and the protection of property rather than people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think that one of the hardest things about celebrating King\u2019s Day for me personally is that we celebrate what he did and we celebrate the importance of it as, like, remembrance and as a memorial. But there\u2019s so many and too many moments where his vision isn\u2019t being lived. It\u2019s not being fulfilled, and the result of it not being fulfilled is violence against all Black people, and it\u2019s not OK,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The youthful Rebirth poets recited pieces in response to the exhibition \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artic.edu\/exhibitions\/9324\/bisa-butler-portraits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bisa Butler: Portraits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d open through Sept. 6. Butler captures portraits of African Americans in colorful quilts that convey individuality as well as themes of family, community and legacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.averyryoung.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Avery R. Young<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an interdisciplinary artist, educator and Rebirth\u2019s coach,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">opened the event by introducing Rebirth poet Simone Reynolds, who delivered her moving poem \u201cA Praise Song for Mama Alberta\u2019s Hands.\u201d Her work easily blended as lyrics into the song \u201cPrecious Lord, Take My Hand\u201d by Thomas A. Dorsey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBisa Butler\u2019s work[s] were very powerful and dynamic to me. The prompt [for my work] gives me room to really look within and see how the pieces connected to me,\u201d said Reynolds, 22.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reynolds joined Rebirth as a senior at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the University of Chicago Charter School\u2019s Woodlawn<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> campus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and she said it has provided her foundation as a performer. She said she has always been challenged as a performer by her coaches as she takes up many talents in being a vocalist, actor and poet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brooks Lansana continued the program with \u201cEmmett Wore His Father\u2019s Ring.\u201d Then Eleanor Ross and Lansana joined together in a duo reading of their poem \u201cOn King Drive.\u201d They told of their observations on King Drive, with poetry that resonates with crime and gloominess. As they recited, visuals of King Drive displayed on a screen. They told about schools that are liberated but still segregated. (Photo from Zoom by Rodricka Taylor\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WeLhFnXJQ6k&amp;feature=youtu.be\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the Spirit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> carried the second segment of the show, focused on King\u2019s legacy and highlighted the stories told by Butler\u2019s quilts, all through rhythm and song. The performance duo, Zahra Glenda Baker and Emily Lansana, brought to life Chicago\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/history\/famous-cases\/baptist-street-church-bombing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">16th Baptist Church<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in their duet \u201cThe Basement.\u201d Then Emily Lansana soloed to sing her composition \u201cDaddy Says I Can.\u201d They joined forces again in \u201cWitness,\u201d a performance about highlighting women who were leaders in bringing change to the world. Baker closed the virtual performance with a song and slideshow of her family and Butler\u2019s quilts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMore than 50 years after [King\u2019s] assassination, many would have hoped we would be further along toward the dream than we are now,\u201d Emily Lansana said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rodricka Taylor is a video and broadcast reporter at Medill.
