Video: South Side communities feel pain due to lack of level 1 trauma care

Summer is approaching and so is the likelihood of an increased number of deaths from gunshots. There have been more than 1,000 people shot by guns since the beginning of 2015, according to statistics gathered by the Chicago Tribune, and the summer heat will drive that number higher. Many of those shootings happen on the South Side where there is no level 1 trauma center – the emergency medical care best prepared to treat patients critically injured by gunshots.

President Barack Obama’s recent announcement that he would build his presidential library in Chicago was applauded by many. The decision to spend more than half-a-billion dollars to build it on the South Side, however, angered some, specifically those who’ve been seeking a level 1 trauma center for the area.

Music helps Southside school with education

There are many reasons why educators encourage high school students to join band classes. Arts and music build essential skills such as creativity and innovation. But there is another important reason that many people may not have known.

Studies have indicated that high school students who participate in bands score better grades on SAT exams and are more likely to do better in college.

VIDEO: Out of prison, he wants to give back to his community ‘in the best way’

After spending nearly a decade going in and out of prison, Arnold Julien, 47, decided to change his life. He joined One Northside, a non-profit that works on neighborhood equality and social-justice related issues. Julien’s focus is on preventing violence in the very same neighborhoods where he grew up.

“I felt that I was definitely part of the problem that was being displayed in the communities, so I thought I would fit in best in that part,” Julien said.
